Is the Atheist Movement Moving Too Fast?
Dorian Enlists AA Guest to Discuss Controversies
So what about all these aggressive Atheist billboards and lawsuits--especially those gutsy, provocative ones put up by NJ-based American Atheists, Inc. (AA) a national organization headed by its new, youthful president, David Silverman? Two of AA’s billboards have been torn down, one by vandals, one by AA’s ad agency itself because it had received threats. Other AA billboards have been largely effective, creating a lot of talk and media coverage and getting thumbs-up from nonbelievers while annoying churchy people.
Is AA being too aggressive? Or not assertive enough? After all, we’ve had to face those giant neon “JESUS SAVES” signs for decades. Aren’t we now in the position of having to catch up with all the hype put out by religion for literally hundreds of years?
Come on Tuesday, September 18, to hear Michael Dorian, filmmaker and Atheist discussion leader, and his special guest for evening, AJ Johnson, Director of Development for AA, at NYC Atheists’ monthly discussion session at the Stone Creek bar and pub.
A Controversial Issue
Some of you may remember our guest AJ Johnson, who has spoken at one other NYCA meeting: She is young, Black, feisty and outspoken about a lot of things, including her bisexuality. She and Dorian promise to incite the group with this controversial topic, which is challenging to those who believe in the “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” homily. Our vinegary AJ also hints that she may bring up a surprise topic during the evening!
WHAT: “IS THE ATHEIST MOVEMENT MOVING TOO FAST?”
A discussion led by Michael Dorian, documentary filmmaker.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at 7 p.m.
WHERE: STONE CREEK BAR & PUB
140 East 27th Street (bet. 3rd & Lex.)
COST: FREE. But buy your own drink and/or food.
That’s how we compensate Stone Creek for
giving us space. The reasonably priced
knoshies are better than in most bars. The
beer selection will satisfy connoisseurs.
