We have previously mentioned the concern about being prepared from an equipment perspective as well as from a liability standpoint. I have decided to take the middle ground on both issues.
From an equipment perspective, I highly recommend you work towards obtaining the gear listed on the basics list, particularly if you are interested in pursuing kayaking beyond the occasional trip. (Go to ?Files? section of our site). Having the right gear not only is safer, but makes it more enjoyable as well. I will not question participants attending events that are classified for ?Everyone? unless something just looks unsafe. Events that are classified as ?Moderate?, I will take a check that everyone has at least the minimum needed for a successful trip. For ?Challenging?, I will insist on wet suits, and all the gear necessary for the trip. In no case will anyone be allowed to paddle without a personnel flotation device. (PFD).
From a legal perspective, I am going to ask each member to read the document in the Files section labeled ?Legal Waiver - Kayak?. This document is in two sections. The first is a sub-section of the Meetup Terms of Service which we all signed off on when joining Meetup. This is the general waiver that discusses Meetup in general. The second section is specific to our group. Kayakers Alliance. It gives definition to each participant?s obligation when attending one of our events. At this point, I am not going to ask to have everyone sign a waiver every time we go out. I will however, expect each member to have read the material and agree to the terms. (I will ask each new member to do the same).
The Bay Area Meetup group for folks enthusiastic about kayaking. A mixture of events that will offer something for every skill level. This Meetup group does not charge fees or dues. Just participate, have fun and expand your skills.
Safety first, an opportunity for everyone to get out on the water and enjoy the many great paddle locations the Bay Area has to offer.
Different Meetups are planned for all levels of experience. Some will launch from areas where rentals are available. Other trips for the more advanced paddlers who have their own equipment.
Kayak camping, kayak geocaching and trips outside of California are all possible.
One safety note:
Unlike some other outdoor activities, kayaking requires a heightened degree of awareness and commitment to safety. While casual participation can be rewarding, please be aware that putting yourself at risk can also put your fellow kayaker's at risk as well. Kayaker's Alliance events are not guided tours, but are instead a get together of like interested people.
