Announcing a possible new outing for Bay Area Wine Society! What
: A Day in the Wine Country; soliciting interestWhen
: Friday, October 22,[masked]:30 PM - 5:30 PMPrice
: $79.00 per personWhere
: Napa Valley
I have put together a very unique and what I think is a very appealing itinerary, but we need a minimum of 23 members and friends of the three meetups I organize to make it work financially. This would cost twice the fee by a tour company, but @ $79 in these times I'm not sure there are enough takers. If this is something you think you'd like to do, please sign up. Payment would come later if the body count in sufficient.
We leave in a luxury coach from 2nd Street between Market and Mission, with a pick up at an all day parking lot closer to the freeway. We make another pick up in Berkeley for East Bay folks who prefer to use their car rather than BART.
First stop: the 92,000 sq. ft. Napa Ridge Winery "Palazzo"-- the largest bottling and aging facility in the Valley (the wine is made in Ceres, CA), with the capacity to bottle twice the number of bottles, 18 million/year, than ALL other facilities in Napa. It also contains 13,000 barrels. It is not open to the public, but the owner, Fearless Fred Franzia, is a classmate and has agreed to let our group observe the operations
Second Stop: Seguin Moreau Cooperage. Watch oak staves being "toasted" and formed into barrels. Learn about how different oak at different toast levels imparts different flavors.
A drive by the newest developments on the river in downtown Napa
Visit wineries in the newest pending Napa appellation, Coombsville American Viticultural Area. We enjoy a sit down catered lunch at Farella Vineyard
with presentations by several local winemakers, followed by a tour of the winery during crush. The wines, which I recently tasted, are superb and relatively unknown.
Then up to Napa Valley Museum in Yountville to view current exhibit: Art & Wine: The Expressions of an Industry
plus the permanent exhibit presenting the history of winemaking in Napa.
Cost covers the bus rental, tasting fees @ wineries, lunch, rental of tables and chairs, and museum entrance.
