Re: [betaNYC] Planning a hackathon around immigration issues

Hey Kat,

I'd be interested in helping out with that hackathon. I built a couple of apps around immigration issues recently and am very interested in the issue. Would be great to get the involvement of fwd.us as well. I attended their strategy meeting this week. They are actively searching ideas about getting the NY tech community to become more engaged about the issue of immigration reform. An immigration hackathon would be a great venue to promote this cause.

Hi everyone,

I am an attorney an immigration nonprofit here in NYC working with youth in deportation proceedings.  While I myself do not have a tech background, I'm very interested in the possibilities of collaboration between the tech and immigrant advocacy communities in the city. Specifically, I'm interested in creating tools to increase access to legal services, social services, and education for undocumented people in the city, particularly youth.

I am in communication both with Noel at Code for America and with Make the Road NY about planning a hackathon around immigrant issues in NYC, hopefully as part of Code Across NYC in late February.  I would also like to organize an event specifically for immigration advocates in January, to introduce them to the concept of civic hacking and how it might help them to further their advocacy efforts.  Similar events have already happened in L.A. (www.lamigrahack.com), Chicago (www.chicagomigrahack.com), and Boston (www.undocutech.org).

I'm looking at this point for volunteers who might be interested in working with me in some of the planning and outreach, as this is the first time I've organized an event of this kind.  I'm also interested to hear ideas that people have about data sets that they might be interested in working with at such an event.

Please contact me if you're interested.  Thanks!
