Announcing a new meeting for 35ish-65ish Bay Area Hikers, Daytrippers and Playful People!
What: Hill Walk - Beckman's to UCSC - Part Deux
When: Sunday, March 9, 10:30 AM
Event fee: USD1.00 per person
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Who should come: anyone who can climb a hill slowly and would like to explore UCSC a little when we get there.
Why: It's nice to get a good workout and there will be as much chatting as we can do while panting. :)
Meeting Description: We will meet at Beckman's - there will be time to get something to eat or drink to go and use the facilities if needed and then will will set off up the hill. We will wait a little while for stragglers. If it's not muddy we might take the gully route, if there is mud we'll use the street route to the University and on to the campus. We'll try and make a loop and come down a different way than we came up. Bring rain clothes, umbrellas, sun hats, water, depending on the weather - light rain we'll go anyway and hope it clears up, heavy rain we will have to go bowling or walk the capitola mall instead. :) Bring money for snacks at Beckman's and possible bus fare down the hill if needed, plus one dollar to organizer. :) Dogs are not allowed on UCSC campus, sorry, Jack. :(
Patti asks - "How far is it?"
My reply -
"This is a tough question, and it's a good question. I hope you don't mind if I post my reply for the those that have signed up. I was thinking we would just go until people wanted to turn back, keeping in mind that what goes up, must come down. :) From Beckman's to the bottom of campus is probably about 2 miles, and then I figured we'd tour around a little bit, and then we have to hike back - or take the bus. ;)
On our last hike, Waddell. I did about 11 miles and that was good. Other people did 13.5, others 1 mile, 6 miles, it really varied. All I asked was that people leave in clumps so they could use the "buddy system" on the way back. Wear good shoes that you are comfortable walking or hiking in. We may be walking through some grass. I don't really have it all planned out. I thought we would be spontaneous and use "group conscience" for decision making about duration and destination - I guess we are going on a "campus tour," led by me. I went to school there and worked up there for 10 years after that so I know my way around the campus pretty well. I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have more. :)
Grant asks - "What's the rain plan?"
My reply - "Well... I guess we have about 4 or 5 options if it's raining heavily:
1. hike anyway and just get wet.
2. call the whole thing and reschedule to another day.
3. hole up in Beckman's and drink coffee and chat.
4. go bowling at Boardwalk bowl where shoe rental is $3 and games are $2 each on Sunday am.
5. "hike" the interior of the Capitola mall for exercise.
I guess we'll just have to take a group conscience day off since it can be pretty unpredictable. I would vote for one of the more social options and I do have rain gear: pants, boots, coat, hat so I'm prepared. :)
See you on the 9th!"
Not this hike underwent a transformation last weekend so I am posting it again.
