Hello, Annyong/,
Welcome to our new members!  This is an update for everyone on the meetup group.
This weekend... we have events all 3 days, and that includes our first long trip... to New York City!  The event for going to NYC has been updated, including bus info.  There is a large NYC Korean meetup group - almost at 1,000 members - and I've posted to ask if anyone there wants to meet us for lunch.  Here is that group's website:
First, quick recap of what's gone on recently:
  • Happy hour last night - if anyone went and has pictures they can be posted here.
  • Thai festival - see pictures posted here.
  • Cherry Blossom walk & Japanese festival - photos are online here.
  • Several ESL classes
  • Mark set up a hike at one of my favorite places - Great Falls Park
  • On Saturday & Sunday there were some Korean movie events as part of the DC Korean Film Festival.  Some group members met film directors/producers both days.
  • Dinner on Sunday at Yee Hwa Korean Restaurant in DC.
And at dinner on Saturday we discussed other ideas, including having a DC ESL/English Conversation event on a regular basis.  We also discussed the idea to have a "Korean Game Show" event, where people would be competing in various challenges while others watched and/or voted.
But, maybe that will happen with the KBS "Let's Learn Korea" show, which new member Daniel Kim posted about here - Korean TV Casting CallKBS / KOREA ONE TV / WKTV is seeking people for a new variety show "Lets learn Korea" about people who want to learn about Korean culture and be on TV.  Shooting is in our metro DC area - click on this link for more details.
Events coming up:
  • Tonight: English conversation / ESL at Korea Daily - (Korea Daily DC site: )
  • Tomorrow: NYC trip: -
NYC trip - I've lived & worked in Manhattan, and know my way around there, and speak fluent "New Yawk-ese".  It's not expected to need to take taxis, and a meeting point at a Korean restaurant near Penn Station will be announced shortly.  Most or all people going have said they want to explore as a group, and Times Square is 10 blocks north of Koreatown.
  • Sunday: 2 Korean Films: Milky Way Liberation Front & Taxi Blues (Korean Film Festival DC
  • Also upcoming is the DC Embassy Open house next weekend.  I've reached out for more information in order to set up an event for when the KORUS House is doing the drum presentations.  (see this Note for more info)
  • the "Korean Travel & Top 10" night is a special event.  It will include a fun list of the top 10 cultural differences between Korean & American culture, and also a discussion about travel in Korea.  A list of travel tips & websites is also being prepared.  The location & date is being finalized, but in the meantime you can enjoy this cartoon which is part of what is being prepared.  It started out smaller, but with comments from group members it grew when Soohyun suggested Soju, and then Casey said (of course) "singing!".
