Temescal Canyon 5-mile Loop Hike to waterfall and Skull Rock

This is a beginner/intermediate hike due to elevation gain.

The hike starts at 1:00. We'll start gathering at 12:45, so please plan your arrival time to include the possibility of traffic.

We'll start with a mostly covered, mostly flat trail for about .5 miles

then head uphill toward the waterfall, which may have some water after the rain that may come this week.

A total of about 1,000 feet of elevation will take us to the scenic overlook

and then to Skull Rock.

After the rain, there might be some water in the waterfall and plenty of wildflowers to photograph.

From Skull Rock, we'll head downhill on the western part of the loop.

What to wear/bring:

Wear running or hiking shoes. Dress in comfortable clothes. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, snacks, and at least a liter of water, $7.00 cash for parking.

Look for my magenta cap. We’ll meet at the picnic tables behind the first restrooms (near the first parking lot).

The park entrance is at the end of Temescal Canyon Road. From PCH, drive East on Temescal Canyon Road. Cross Sunset into park entrance.

Parking, etc.

Be sure to pay for parking at one of the kiosks.

If you get to the stop sign near the second parking lot, be sure to come to a full stop. You will be fined $100 if you roll through it (there is a camera at the stop sign).

There’s usually free parking on Sunset and Temescal Canyon Road.
