Dr. Lauren Riters will discuss research on the motivation to communicate in songbirds that is broadly applicable to other species, including humans. She will talk about how biological reward systems ensure that songbirds sing the right song at the right time, studies designed to ask birds whether it "feels good" to sing, and evidence showing that singing when alone (like a human singing in the shower) is intrinsically rewarding, but that singing to influence the behavior of another is not.
