Announcing a new Meetup for nature lovers meetup!

What: Booknic

When: Friday, June 18,[masked]:00 PM

Where:
Dupont Circle - the park in the middle
Dupont Circle
Washington, DC 20001

Our last meeting (Aug 09) was very enjoyable. We talked in general about Thoreau, our relationship to nature in general, etc., We had a guy from Australia talk about hiking etc., in his country. The next meeting will be on friday, Jun 18. We will discuss upto page 80 (chapters 1 & 2). It is a dense book, so we'll take our time going through it. Feel free to join us even if you haven't had much time to read the book.

As you might have noticed, we don't have too many indoor outings -- meditation, book reading, etc., -- these days. As long as it is nice outside, why stay indoors? But I came up with an idea for a hybrid event -- an outdoors book reading picnic, or booknic as it is called. I have (by the powers vested in me :-) ) selected Henry David Thoreau's "Walden." It is available in bookstores but you can also read the entire book online for free (if you are poor like me) by googling the words Emerson Thoreau Walden (without quotations) and clicking on the link with the book picture.

We'll sit on the grass (over a picnic blanket) in the Northeastern sector of the park (facing Starbucks), eat our lunches and discuss Emerson's foreword and the first two chapters. It is quite an inspiring book and each line is rich with insights. We'll savor it slowly over the summer so as not to miss any of the subtle flavors and aromas. Please bring your lunch! (or buy one at one of the restaurants around Dupont). [In the case of inclement weather, i.e, rain, we'll meet inside the Starbucks mentioned above].
