Hope to see you all thursday for the hike in Roosevelt Island. Weather is supposed to be excellent. The wetlands should be bursting with life and it would be great to watch the sun set over the Potomac. For details go to Sunset Hike in Roosevelt island
Please vote for Carbon free DC, our fellow meetup group working to promote local action on climate change and sustainable living. They are a finalist in a National Geographic competition with a great chance of winning $20,000 to green a low-income city block here in DC, but will be depend on how many votes they get. Currently of the 10 finalists, they are in third place... we have 12 days to change that!

Announcing a new Meetup for nature lovers' meetup!
What: Cool Summer hike in Catoctin
When: July 18,[masked]:30 AM
10300 Rockville Pike
Rockville, MD 20852
Enjoy the cool forests in the Catoctin mountains, about 15 miles north of Frederick. We'll take in great views of rural maryland, a towering waterfall, and visit the ruins of the charcoal industry that deforested large areas of the mountains in the beginning of the 20th century. Luckily for us this whole area was converted to recreational purposes and it is now well forested with maples, oak, tulip poplar and other deciduous trees providing a cool refuge in the hot days of summer. The hike will be 6.5 miles long with about 1000 feet of ascent
, so it should provide a good workout as well. We should be finished with the hike itself by around 3pm.
After the hike, if time permits and people are interested we will wind down by the lake and the waterfalls, visit an orchard, take in the rustic charms of Thurmont or the quirky and lively streets of downtown Frederick.Meet in the outdoor parking lot just across from the Grosvenor metro station entrance
. If riding the train, after getting off the escalators go to your left, cross the kiss and ride parking lot into the big outdoor parking lot. Please bring good hiking shoes, camera if available, water and a bag lunch
. The trailhead is about 55 miles ( an hour's drive ) from Grosvenor. Please let us know whether you are driving or need a ride
Hope to see you there!
