I first started this group with the intention of bringing people together that love piano music or any music in general that they are interested in sharing. I want everyone to be extremely comfortable playing anything they wish, whether it's a segment of any piece or if it's a complete work. I encourage composers to play their pieces and talk about them as well. Everyone that plays other instruments is also encouraged to bring them and play solo works or play works that need piano accompaniment, this way, other members can interact with each other not just in the meetup, but practice outside of it as well.
This group has grown into something more than the original goal, which is a great thing. Now we have people that can play other instruments as well and they collaborate with others. The last meetup for example we had an opera singer and a classical guitar player.
Just to give some examples, as collaborative works are concerned, we have performed Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, many arias involving singers, and one of our members that has only been playing piano for two years played a Bach piece on the piano with an experienced violinist. Sometimes these collaborations happen during the meetup itself.
So far it has been a success, people love the comfortable environment here in the south loop of downtown Chicago and do not feel pressured to play in front of everyone. You won't receive any kind of criticism unless you sincerely ask for it. We are also not specific to one kind of music or genre, we have players that play Jazz, Classical, Folk music, as well as other kinds of music. Keep in mind that this is a free meetup group. There is responsibility on your part as well as a member of this group. We have a diverse group that has a wide variety of tastes in music. You don't have to like everything you hear but you must have respect towards another members playing selection. If there is some music you do not like and it causes you to show disrespect in public, you should reconsider your membership for this group. I had to state this so that this issue does not surface.
Anyone in the Chicago area is welcome to join this group! Whether you play the piano (ANY skill level) or don't play the piano but love piano music, also join this group. We can get together, play some pieces for each other, kick back and relax and listen to others, listen to some high quality CD's or DVD's or share our own. If you have any music friends, invite them as well. All are welcome! We welcome any ideas you may have as well, join us!
