We will meet by the station attendant's kiosk at the Rosslyn Metro at 9:00 AM and hike across the downstream side of the Key Bridge. Once in Washington, we'll descend two centuries to the C&O Canal Towpath and follow it downstream to the Canal's historic Tidelock.
From the Tidelock, we continue through the southern terminus of Rock Creek Park and hike four score and seven paces past the Lincoln Memorial.
Once in serious cherry blossom territory, we will pass the Jefferson Memorial on our way to the FDR Memorial. After a short break, we will return past more cherry blossoms along Ohio Drive and cross Arlington Memorial Bridge.
Once back in Virginia, we loop around to the Mount Vernon Trail and follow it to the 88-acre Theodore Roosevelt Island preserve. Here we'll stop for another short break at the monumental tribute to Teddy Roosevelt and continue around the island. We will then follow the Custis Trail back to Rosslyn. We should be finished by 3:00 PM.
This hike is 10.3 miles long, with negligible elevation gain. Please bring water since most public water fountains are closed on National Park Service property. Also, bring the $2 trip fee.
Optional items include snacks for the short breaks, bug spray for any early Spring insects, mud-worthy footwear if it has rained a day or so before the hike and a camera for the glorious cherry blossoms (keep your fingers crossed).
