Bethesda to Silver Spring Hike (Rescheduled)

Details

Well, the Boxing Day weather is going to be pretty miserable thanks to a cold, hard, steady rain, so we're moving this hike to the first Saturday of 2013 instead. Starting from the Bethesda Metro Station, we'll proceed on the eastern extension of the Capital Crescent Trail (a.k.a. the Georgetown Branch Trail). Our first attraction will be the grand hiker-biker tunnel beneath Wisconsin Avenue. After the always-interesting crossings of Connecticut Avenue and Jones Mill Road, we'll walk atop the magnificent Rock Creek Trestle with fine views of the eponymous valley below us. Soon afterwards the trail ends, and we'll hack our way through the wilds of suburbia into downtown Silver Spring. We'll lunch inside the Panera or some similar establishment before catching Metro to our destinations, hopefully by 12:30. Total length of this easy, level one-way hike will not exceed 5 miles. Meet at 9 a.m. at the top of the Bethesda Metro escalators at Wisconsin Avenue and Old Georgetown Road. Bring beverages, snacks, lunch money and the $2 trip fee.
