What we're about

The Bay Area Agile Leadership Network (BayALN) was founded in 2006 to support a community of practice in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. We provide a forum for sharing practical experiences and advice. We also explore and develop Agile techniques, understanding and practices at the project, department, organization and enterprise levels.

Systemic Coaching Special Interest Group [online]

Link visible for attendees

This is a support group for Agilists in the trenches who want to explore the systemic group dynamics that can make Agile coaching so vexing. We are gathering Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters in a workshop format to dig deep into the hidden social contracts that are at the root of chronic challenges. They undermine our efforts to help teams find their journey to becoming self-organizing, high performing teams. In a confidential setting, we will explore the archetypal dynamics that translate well across organizations by looking at the specific work challenges you bring to the group like:

  • Chronic conflict within and between teams and departments
  • Challenges aligning with managers
  • Stuck projects and Agile initiatives
  • Coaching challenges with a team or specific team members
  • Increase our ability to influence situations
  • Shift team and departmental culture

Volker Frank will facilitate systemic constellations and share some of the underlying principles of self-organization that lead to the hidden contracts and allow us to resolve them. If you want to explore and understand these complex social and organizational issues in any coaching context, this group is for you.

In these sessions participants will:

  • Experience systemic coaching while supporting others
  • Learn how to look at organizational dynamics from a systemic perspective
  • Receive coaching in a safe and supportive environment
  • Share knowledge and wisdom
  • Network and build closer connections with other participants

Come with questions and challenges you're experiencing on your Agile journey.

Please contact Volker Frank ([masked]) or Huy Nguyen ([masked]) if you have any questions.

Act with Courage: Create Possibilities for Today and Tomorrow - HSD Institute

You and those you support continue to see increasing complexity in workplaces, communities, and personal lives.

  • You are pushed and pulled by so many forces you can't ignore--or control! Economics, politics, competition, and social stressors exist at all those scales.
  • Daily, you navigate differences that demand your attention. You have choices you don't understand and multiple options for how you can spend your time.
  • And the real kicker is that these aspects of work and life are so enmeshed that you can't find a solution for one challenge without risking an exacerbation of other challenges. You can become frozen in time, not knowing what to do next!

What can you do to help yourself - and others - deal with the complexity and uncertainty you face? How can you support your clients and colleagues as they struggle with similar issues of their own?

Human systems dynamics offers a way to sort through the complexity and find your next wise action. Glenda Eoyang and Royce Holladay of Human Systems Dynamics Institute will share tools and perspectives from their simple, yet highly effective, approach to living and thriving in a complex world. Learn how you can move toward effective action, even in a world you cannot predict or control. Leave the session with new tools you can use immediately to make sense of the complexities you face.

Speakers:
Dr. Glenda Eoyang works with public and private organizations to help them thrive in the face of overwhelming complexity and uncertainty. She is founder and a pioneer in the field of human systems dynamics (HSD). As founding Executive Director of the Human Systems Dynamics Institute, she has shepherded this small non-profit through 20 years of growth and change. Now recognized around the globe for her work and its power to change lives and organizational functioning, she continues to explore new ideas and share her insights and learnings.

Through Human Systems Dynamic Institute, Glenda uses the simplicity and clarity of her ideas to help others see patterns in the chaos that surrounds them, understand the patterns in simple and powerful ways, and take practical steps to shift chaos into order. Over the years, she has built a network of over 900 people who have been trained as Human Systems
Dynamics Professionals. Her clients include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oxfam International, Canada School of Public Service, Cargill, Fraser Health Authority (BC), and Roche/Genentech.

Glenda’s latest book, with co-author Royce Holladay, is Adaptive Action: Leveraging Uncertainty in Your Organization (Stanford University Press, April 2013). Additionally she has published numerous articles, book chapters, and essays

Royce Holladay is a self-proclaimed "hunter/gatherer/sharer" of ideas, insights, and possibility as she steps into life's complexity. Looking at the world through multiple lenses, she hunts for patterns and unexpected perspectives in times of uncertainty and turbulence. Gathering them to explore and catalogue, she shares them as new connections and ideas she finds true and useful. Royce enjoys seeing a slow, growing recognition, as well as great bursts of ideas that are slightly new, creating a new understanding of reality.

Her work in human systems dynamics (HSD) offers her opportunities to support people as they deal with complex changes and challenges. As teacher, consultant, and coach, she works with individuals, groups, and organizations to use HSD in as they engage in complex change. Well-grounded in theoretical foundations of HSD, she brings a practitioner's voice to applying the theory, models, and methods to everyday opportunities and challenges.

Ms. Holladay has co-authored five books and three guides, using HSD as a foundation to see, understand, and influence patterns. Additionally she has published six books of poetry, which is another language she uses to share her perspectives on the complexity of human interactions. As Director of Services in HSD Institute, Ms. Holladay provides leadership as a consultant in organizational work with clients, as a thought leader among colleagues around the world, and as a skilled developer of powerful training opportunities and materials.
