Re: [BayAreaCycling] Let's implement a buddy system on rides!

Hey All, just for you to know.  Drivers in Walnut Creek can be very aggressive.  I have lived here for a few months and got into two accidents and close to getting hit in a few other incidents.  I also heard complains from other bikers.  So, be very careful when you ride throughout Walnut Creek.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for your input. Just to clarify...I wasn't adjusting my cue sheet when I was hit. I had fallen behind b/c I slowed down going through a parking lot to adjust my cue sheet. I try very hard to ride safely, to set a good example and for no other reason than to ensure my own safety. IMO, driver was 100% at fault. I was going about my business in right hand part of 3 lane road and driver passed me way too close and way too fast, thus hitting me.

In any event, I agree that a buddy system / asst. ride leader bringing up rear / no drop policy / some combo thereof is the way to go. After my phone was destroyed I had no clue where I was and no means of contacting anyone to help me. I'm completely new to the area and hadn't stepped foot in Walnut Creek before. (Very grateful to Walnut Creek PD who gave me lift back to BART station...I was too shaken up to ride back alone.)

Hi all,

Hope you've been enjoying the great riding weather. I rode 116 miles from Novato to Santa Cruz on Saturday. Then I swam the alcatraz crossing on Sunday! Both were epic!

I'm reaching out this morning because one of our members was struck by a hit-and-run driver over the weekend. Fortunately she wasn't hurt very badly so we can count ourselves lucky that we can all learn some not-too-hard lessons from the incident.

The primary lesson is this: It's easy to be invisible in a group of people, many of whom are new to each other. This dynamic resulted in our member falling back and being struck without anyone noticing. I think we can fix this with a simple buddy system on rides. When you get to a ride start, and before anybody takes off, communicate your level and find a buddy. This ensures we are all know, and are known by somebody on our rides and we account for each other at all the stops. Thoughts?

Second, be aware out there and keep your full attention on the road. Barabara, I doubt whether adjusting your cue sheet played any role in the incident but it's a good reminder to get things set before we start and to pull over if we need to make adjustments. I was following a course on my GPS through unfamiliar neighborhoods on my Santa Cruz ride. My buddy actually yelled at me because I was moving erratically with my attention on the map. Lesson learned.

Interested in your thoughts on ride safety. Please feel free to reply to all as I think it's an important conversation and we can never talk too much about it.

Be safe. Have fun. Let's Ride!
