The Dana Classic - 50 Miles from Brewster to Van Cortlandt Park

Grand Central Station - The Clock

Welcome to the Dana Classic, a 50 mile journey along the Putnam Trail which begins in Brewster NY and ends at Van Cortlandt. Dana introduced the Brompton riders to this beautiful trail back in 2018. We continue to pay homage to her for leading this epic journey. We’re planning to ride the entire length of the Putnam/North Country/South Country trail, from Brewster to Van Cortlandt Park. It’s a glorious ride, 50 miles of rail trail through the woods, with only 2-3 miles of street riding. Light construction which may result in detours. This is an advanced Brompton ride due to the long distance and also due to the rolling hills at the start of the route. There aren’t any epic climbs, but the gently rolling hills are pretty consistent. Most of the climbs are within the first 10km. That said, the general tendency of the route is downhill, so especially during the second half, you can enjoy some long extended downhills. (See the attached elevation map.) What to expect: • 47 miles of paved rail trail through the woods, 3 miles of street biking. • The route is generally pretty shady since we’re in the woods. • The ride is mainly rural, so there are limited places to buy food and drink. Riders should bring enough water and snacks for the ride, or buy it at the start of the ride in Brewster. • Fun with other enthusiastic Brompton riders! Food and Drink: • Lunch/snack stop in Yorktown Heights, 17 miles into the ride -options include trailside cafe, dominos pizza, taco bell, etc. • Final pitstop will be in Yonkers at Lanternas, 7 miles from the end of the ride. La Laternas is an Italian restaurant with outdoor beer and wine garden. Timeline: • 9:45 Meet at Grand Central at the big clock at the information booth (alternatively, meet us at the Brewster station at 10:39am) • 10:10 Our train departs Grand Central on the Harlem line for Brewster . Train arrives into Brewster Station at 11:38am . Ride begins from Brewster Station to Putnam Trail If you want to shorten the ride from 50 to 34 miles: • You can exit the trail near Tarrytown. It's a 3.5 mile downhill ride to the train station and you can take the Metro North Hudson line back to Grand Central. Special Note: Due to social distancing we will place a cap at 20 riders for this event. There will be two experienced leaders for this ride, one to lead those that have a quicker pace in the front, and one to sweep those at a leisure pace from the back. Safety is paramount and all riders will be required to wear helmets, masks. We ask that if RSVP for this ride you are comfortable with a distance at a touring pace of 10-12mph. We will keep a safe distance between riders on the trail. Also please ensure your Brommie is road worthy by inflating tyres with enough pressure or stopping by the Junction or authorized Brompton dealer for a quick checkup. We recommend your purchase your ticket in advance via the MTAeTix app. Price is $15.00 for single journey This ride will cancel in the event of changes to pandemic or severe weather. Otherwise than that, ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
