What we're about

Day Trips from London is brought to you by the main organisers of one of the largest and best reviewed groups on Meetup.com - Friends in London. (https://www.meetup.com/friends-in-london/)We've been organising some of the most popular meetup events for 10 years.

We organise regular Day Trips from London to some of the most historic and beautiful places in the UK. The destinations we have visited so far include; Bath, Birmingham Christmas Market, Blenheim Palace, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Broadstairs Viking Bay, Cambridge, Canterbury, Cardiff, Christchurch, Corfe Castle, Cotswolds, Durdle Door, Ely, Lulworth Cove, Newmarket Race Course, Oxford, Poole, Portsmouth, Rye, Rochester, Salisbury, Sandbanks, Seven Sisters, Stratford upon Avon, Wales, Weymouth, White Cliffs of Dover and Winchester Christmas Market.

The vast majority of our trips involve booking luxury air conditioned coaches. We also organise shorter trips via train and have organised boat trips. Our Day Trips from London also regularly include guided tours and visits to famous attractions as part of the package.

The social part of the Day Trips is just as important. So we also arrange optional After-Trip-Drinks when we return to London in the late evening. This gives everyone the chance to continue socialising, discuss your day trip experience and continue making friends over a few drinks.

Joining any new meetup group can be overwhelming as the choice is so wide and varied. However, we have a proven track record of running very successful social events through our Friends in London Meetup Group. You can check out the reviews/ratings for the past 400 meetup events we have run on our sister Meetup Group by 'Clicking Here' (https://www.meetup.com/friends-in-london/).

Day Trips from London Meetup Group was founded 5 years ago by brothers Martyn Lloyd and Terry Lloyd who continue to host all events. Some of the meetup events we have organised together are often the best attended of any meetup group in the UK, so we're very experienced event organisers who are meticulous when it comes to planning details.

Mainly, it's also about having fun. On our Day Trips you'll be part of a club where everyone is there to socialise in addition to sight-seeing. The majority of members attend by themselves and we always ensure no-one is left out - so don't worry about being nervous or shy.

50 of the 53 trips we have organised so far have received a maximum overall rating of 5 stars from those members attending (reading the reviews/ratings of past events is so important for anyone deciding to join any meetup group). We hope to continue the high standard we have set on all future trips. This is why we always visit new destinations for our trips before they are scheduled. Sometimes we spend entire weekends in locations before deciding upon whether they would be suitable or not to organise a new meetup day trip. This ensures the events can be organised with as much detail as possible and we know that a destination will be suitable for our group.

Please note that unfortunately we can only offer our day trip to adults due to the vastly increased legal responsibilities that will otherwise be involved (and we are just meetup group and just do not have the resources to adjust this policy). However, providing members are adults (18 and over) all ages are welcome at our events.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me (Martyn). You can do so by clicking on my profile photograph and choosing the option to message. Alternatively you can contact us via mobile phone between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

By attending any of our day trips members (and guests of members) confirm they have read and agreed with our terms and conditions. Please 'Click Here' (http://www.meetup.com/Day-Trips-From-London/pages/Terms_and_Conditions/) to read these terms and conditions.

Martyn Lloyd and Terry Lloyd who founded this meetup group organise events on behalf of Trips from London Ltd and we both still continue to host/attend every trip.

Medieval east-England - Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham and Saffron Walden coach trip

Join us on a private luxury coach trip to three enchanting medieval destinations in historic east-England. This will take place on Saturday 23rd March. Our first destination will be the historic and colourful town of Saffron Walden. Our second destination will be the ancient and enthralling 'Cathedral Town' of Bury St Edmunds - known as the 'Jewel of Suffolk'. Our final destination will be 'magical' Lavenham - the best preserved medieval settlement in England, with an almost fictional/fantasy appearance - and today best known as the birthplace of Harry Potter :-) Included in the price of £38: • Privately-hired, luxury return coach travel from London to three destinations - Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham and Saffron Walden. • Fully planned day trip with a detailed itinerary. This day trip will be hosted by two very experienced group organisers with 6 years experience of organising day trips through this Meetup.com social travel group. • Guided microphone commentary of our locations on the coach before we arrive at our destinations and individual concise text guides/booklets of each location which we have personally researched and written. • Optional Treasure Hunt in Bury St Edmunds with prizes which was created by the organisers of this group - we planned this treasure hunt earlier this month when we visited the town again :-) • Optional pre-planned group strolls through Bury St Edmunds, Saffron Walden and Lavenham, where we will take in the main sights which we will have already detailed in our earlier guided coach commentary/text guides. • Quiz on the coach relating to our day trip locations/experiences with prizes. • Raffle on the coach with prizes. • Pay pal fees. An Introduction to our first destination - Saffron Walden: Saffron Walden is a picturesque Medieval market town that dates back to 1141 AD. It has a rich heritage of historic buildings, with many fine examples of elaborate mounded plasterwork (pargetting), especially around Castle and Bridge Streets, exemplified by the Old Sun Inn and Cross Keys. The town also contains the beautiful Church of St Mary's (circa 1250 AD). The focus of the town is the picturesque market square with its many independent shops and eateries. An introduction to our second destination - Bury St Edmunds: This "Jewel of Suffolk' is a beautiful 'Cathedral Town' steeped in history. It's named after the great Saxon King Edmund who was martyred here in 870 AD. Its most famous relic is the ruined abbey, which is located in the picturesque Abbey Gardens. On the outskirts of the gardens are the magnificent 15th century church of St Mary, with its beautiful hammerbeam roof. We will also see the beautiful St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which has an imposing 150ft Gothic tower. Members will have time for lunch in Bury St Edmunds. There will also be time to visit both the interior of St Edmundsbury Cathedral and St Mary's Church. Note that the Abbey Gardens, St Edmundsbury Cathedral and St Mary's Church all have free entry. Members will also have the option of taking part in a treasure hunt which we have created around the central square. An introduction to our third destination - Lavenham: The splendid picture/postcard village of Lavenham in Suffolk is often regarded as the finest and best preserved medieval settlement in England. It contains over 300 listed and historic buildings from the 13th - 16th centuries. Many of its 'warped' buildings are in strikingly vibrant colours and are a sight to behold! Among its many highlights are the striking Church of St Peter with its 141 ft. bell tower, the 14th century Swan Inn and the 13th century Lavenham Priory. We will also see the exterior of 14th century De Vere House which was featured as Harry Potter's birthplace in the fictional town of Godric's Hollow. Full Plan/Itinerary: 08.30: am - Coach pick-up point is 2 minutes walk from St James Park Tube Station or 7 minutes walk from Westminster Tube Station 10:10 am - Approximate arrival time in Saffron Walden. 11:30 am - The coach will leave Saffron Walden and head for Bury St Edmunds. 12:30 pm - Approximate arrival time in Bury St Edmunds. As soon as we arrive we'll take everyone on an optional 40 minute pre-planned stroll through the town where we will take in the major sights, including the Abbey Gardens and surrounding ruins. Afterwards will be free time for lunch and continue exploring Bury St Edmunds (and to take part in the optional treasure hunt). On past day trips the majority of members have spontaneously divided into small groups for lunch - although many prefer to individually explore locations. There are an abundance of places to eat in the town centre if you haven't already brought a packed-lunch. Members will also have free time to explore the Cathedral and St Mary's church (they both have free entry). 2:45 pm - The coach will leave Bury St Edmunds and head for Lavenham. 3:15 pm - Approximate arrival time in Lavenham. As soon as we arrive we'll take everyone on a 25 minute pre-planned stroll through the village where we will take in the major sights. However, if you have booked on the trip and can no longer attend, we will refund your money only if the meetup is full and someone else takes your place (and pays for the place). Scheduled arrival time back in London: In the very unlikely event of major delays we may extend our scheduled arrival time on the day back in London by approximately 45 minutes. However, this will be very rare and at the discretion of the specific drivers as they must adhere to very strict driving hours to conform to 'maximum hours' safety regulations. This will only happen when there has been major delays and is just a policy to ensure attendees receive the best experience possible and the maximum amount of time at our destinations given very unlikely circumstances.
