Staging Jackson Pollock Exhibition @ Whitechapel Gallery
Staging Jackson Pollock 4 September 2018 – 24 March 2019 "The revolutionary painting of American Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) was premiered in the UK in 1958 at the Whitechapel Gallery. Travelling to Europe from New York’s Museum of Modern Art after Pollock’s untimely death, the show provoked bewilderment and excitement. Six decades on, Pollock’s masterpiece Summertime 9A (1948) returns to the Whitechapel. Director Bryan Robertson had decided that the Gallery should be as audaciously modern as Pollock’s art and invited architect Trevor Dannatt (b. 1920, UK) to design the exhibition. Dannatt’s constructivist design transformed the salon style gallery into a white cube. His ‘cohesive architectural ensemble’ included freestanding breezeblock walls, black panels, footlights, and an undulating ceiling of suspended fabric immersing visitors in a powerful encounter with painting as environment. MoMA’s International Programme was rumoured to be sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as part of a raft of cultural initiatives serving as soft power in the Cold War. Abstract Expressionism was used to emblematise freedom of expression, countering the communist ideology of the Soviet Union. Staging Jackson Pollock also includes rare archival material and an exclusive recent interview with Dannatt, to revisit how the show was organised and the reasons for its profound significance." https://www.britannica.com/biography/Jackson-Pollock The exhibition is free, but we are charging £1 (with a strip of raffle tickets) towards running fees of the group. We do hope that you can join us on our first outing of 2019. We will go on to a nearby public house afterwards, venue to be confirmed nearer the time any suggestions appreciated!

What we're about

This group’s principle aim is to provide a friendly social network for LGBTQ+ Londoners who live and work in and around East London. However, membership is also open to those who live elsewhere in London or are new to the city as well as our good friends and neighbours from Europe. The majority of meetings will be arranged in and around East London, namely Hackney and the North East London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Havering & Barking & Dagenham and the City of London. Other Meetups may be arranged further afield, but unlike other groups, will take account of travel connections and disruptions on the East side of London. Meet ups will include pub meets (at gay & straight venues), meals, exhibition visits, cinema and theatre meets. As well as other activities, including walks and visiting places of interest. Occasionally we might tag along with another Meetup Group. Where possible we will arrange meets that take account different budgets too. Members are welcome to make suggestions for Meetups, or host their one. They should contact one of the Groups organisers.

Please note that our meet up notice board does not exist to provide free advertising for your business or free publicity for your event, it is purely social. Members found posting adverts here for their own businesses without any permission from the organisers will be automatically deleted.

Rules: All we ask is that you treat all group members respectfully, and if you are unable to attend a Meetup you have signed yourself up for, you change your RSVP asap, it only takes a second and saves the organisers waiting for people who are not coming. There is also a small £1 fee for the majority of events to help cover the cost of using the meet up platform.
