Getting outside with Campmor

The Dutch Doctor Shelter, on White Bar Trail.

1.6 miles from Johnsontown road parking lot and you’re at The Dutch Doctor Lean To, a large stone structure with wooden floors and generous overhand.
This hike will start at 9:00am please be at parking lot early this lot fills up fast.
This is a relatively easy hike for anyone looking to step in the wilderness their first time. We're close enough to our vehicles, but a nice get away to feel like we're in the deep back woods the easy hike from the cars to the shelter. Welcome to Dutch Doctor Shelter on the White Trail in Harriman State Park. The Dutch Doctor Shelter, built in 1935 is a three-sided stone structure on the White Bar Trail used by hikers for overnight camping. It is named for John Frederick Helms, the “Old Dutch Doctor,” who lived nearby from 1874 to about 1892. He made a living by raising medicinal herbs, such as ginseng.

2. 2 liters of water
3. Favorite snack
4. Comfortable foot ware

When we arrive at the designated location we'll pause for a snack and your photo ops. We will then make our way back down the trail for a hang out at Harriman’s own Rhode’s Tavern.

Anniversary Hike

Join us for a friendly and easy day hike. We can discuss which trail the group is up for but considering they are easy the blue loop is my choice (a lot cooler trail as well). There is a small beach and lake at the center of the park, with basketball courts if you would like to stay after.
What you will need:
Small day bag.
At least a liter of water.
Small snack.
Comfortable hiking shoes.

There is a small parking lot right at the start of the blue trial (which is pinned), it gets packed sometimes. If so we will meet at the big parking lot near the beach/hooks lake a little further down the road. Any questions shoot us a message or post on the board.

My plan is to go to Big Ed's right after for a late lunch

Alder Lake - Cold Weather Gear Test

In the western Catskill Mountains, near Margaretville and the Pepacton Reservoir is Alder Lake, and old resort lake that is now State Forest, and offers primitive camping around the lake. It is backpack only in, however it is a short walk from the parking area to the approximately 7 designated primitive campsites around the lake.
The 77-acre man-made lake, is handsomely surrounded by a high mountains of the Mill Brook Range, and other unnamed mountains. It is a 6-mile hike to the east to get to Balsam Mountain, home of a fire tower.
The 1.5 mile trail around the lake has several interesting views of the lake.

This is a cold weather outing the following gear list is needed
-zero degree sleep system - tent - hammock - hot tent you choose
-warm clothing (layers speak with an organizer if you’re unsure)
-knife
-saw
-head lamp
-2 way radio
-water filter and bladers
-gas stove
-traction devices for your boots
-your favorite food
