The Art of Photography Palm Beaches

Arnold is a retired veterinarian, street photographer, and writer whose work has appeared in photography publications including KLICK Magazine and Mobiography and has been exhibited and recognized in numerous photo competitions. He is also an enthusiastic, borderline‑neurotic street photographer with a tendency to obsess over questions most people would wisely ignore. While other photographers simply go out and take pictures, Arnold can happily spend hours wondering whether umbrellas are clichés, whether photographs should have titles, and whether any of this really matters.
This presentation is the result.
In the first half, “Avoiding Street Photography Clichés,” Arnold looks at familiar subjects such as silhouettes, cell phones and umbrellas, exploring when they become visual shortcuts and when they become effective storytelling tools. Using examples from his own work, he argues that the problem is rarely the subject itself, but our tendency to photograph the obvious instead of the human story beneath it.
The second half, “Should Street Photographers Title Their Photos?” tackles another surprisingly controversial question: should photographs stand entirely on their own, or cana title deepen meaning and guide interpretation? Drawing on iconic historical images and his own award‑winning photographs, Arnold explores the advantages and pitfalls of both approaches.
Arnold says, “Street photography is often described as photography of everyday life, but I think it’s really photography of small human moments.” Whether discussing clichés or titles, the underlying question is the same: how do we create photographs that communicate something genuinely human? His goal isn’t to provide definitive answers, but to spark a conversation about how we see, interpret and present our work.

Barbara is an experienced artist having been both a former art teacher and interior designer. Fortunately for us she is also an organizer in The Art of Photography. She will be presenting a variety of image genres that display her artistic passion, while you enjoy her varied collection of compelling work. The goal with Barbara's presentation is for you to get ideas you can apply to your own photography and craft.

Barbara says, "I am a firm believer that eyes are a photographer’s most valuable tool. I try to shoot just as I want my final shot to be with as little cropping as possible. I also never use a tripod but love post processing using Photoshop Elements, Nik collection, Smart Photo Editor and Topaz Studio. My other photography props are black and white plexiglass and a light board.

Additionally, I have a fascination with floral and plant subjects, but my love for abstract cannot be denied. I am very interested in street photography, but have been too timid to venture more deeply into that genre so far. I am so glad to be a part of this marvelously talented group of photographers - there is so much more to learn."

They came out of the dark like smoke and rumors under ribbons of light. It was the half-scene half-truths bathed in blood that brought me here. One by one, both the villains and heroes of my imagination emerged, leery and armed to the teeth. I may have come seeking answers, yet it was I, face-to-face with, “The Interrogator.”
Sharks swim in the deeper reaches of our collective fears. Through the principles of Film Noir, I set out to transform them into gritty characters caught in an ambiguously beautiful spotlight. Despised, admired, and ultimately misunderstood, they reflect the bright and shadowy nature of our own existence, just as those pioneering film-makers intended.
Staging high-key sunlight as it diffuses down, I can examine the grey and black tones of the void. By envisioning the mysterious ocean depths as a nightscape where predators lurk, you are thrust into a murky world in which one must lay trust in known killers in order to escape unscathed. In celebration of the groundbreaking films of Orson Welles, John Alton, and other Masters of Light & Shadow, I let the light be my guide to explore the darker tones telling us a deeper story of life and death.
