User Research: Best practices, pitfalls and common challenges

One of the key pillars of good product development is knowing the user. This is sometimes skipped over, but not tonight as we immerse ourselves in the field of user research! Whether you’re exploring a new problem space, validating a solution idea, or looking to figure out whether your designs are usable, talking to users can make all the difference. Unfortunately, too few companies have figured out how to do this research effectively and efficiently. Asking the wrong questions or speaking to the wrong people can lead to bad product and design decisions. We’ve invited product, design and research leaders from Pivotal Labs, Alpha, Full Story and Meetup to share their experiences with us via a series of lightning talks. They will speak about user research pitfalls and best practices, how to do research if you don’t have dedicated researchers, and more. Please meet our guest presenters: Pranay Sethi, Product Designer, Pivotal Labs https://www.linkedin.com/in/pranaysethi Agata Bugaj, Product Manager, Full Story https://www.linkedin.com/in/agata-bugaj-a0402a2 Alexa Szal, Product Manager, Alpha https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexaszal Brian Landry, Head of Design and Research, Stash invest https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianlandryphd Liz Chinchilla, Brand strategist and UX researcher, Nectar Sleep https://www.linkedin.com/in/lizchinchilla Event Details: Doors will open at 6:00 pm. Product Is Hard: Marty Cagan

On World Product Day, we are so excited to have Marty Cagan with us in NYC to speak about the hardships of Product Management and how to successfully conquer them. Marty has been coaching product people for many years, and mostly the questions he gets are straightforward, but occasionally he'll get a truly tough question. The type that doesn't have a clear cut answer, and it's not obvious what the best course of action might be, but can really make a difference in your success. In this talk, he'll be posing these questions, and then sharing his opinions and reasoning. Nothing pertaining to product is off limits. We'll talk about politics, gender, culture and even (process) religion. We'll discuss prioritization and decision making, especially when we don't have as much data as we'd like; handling very difficult people especially senior executives; managing conflict on the team; dealing with low morale; changing company culture; regaining control of your time, and picking your battles. We will also have a Q&A where you can pose your own tough questions. Bio: Marty Cagan, Founder and Partner, Silicon Valley Product Group Before founding the Silicon Valley Product Group to pursue his interests in helping others create successful products through his writing, speaking, advising and coaching, Marty Cagan served as an executive responsible for defining and building products for some of the most successful companies in the world, including Hewlett-Packard, Netscape Communications, and eBay. As part of his work with SVPG, Marty is an invited speaker at major conferences and top companies across the globe. Marty is also the author of the book INSPIRED: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love. Event Details: Doors open at 6:30pm Panel will begin at 7:00pm A special thank you to Pivotal Labs (https://pivotal.io/labs) for hosting us this month!
