Upcoming events (4+)
See all- James River National Wildlife Refuge clean-upNeeds location
The volunteer event at Presquile National Wildlife Refuge (Chesterfield County), previously scheduled for the middle of November, has been rescheduled and relocated. The new volunteer date is at 9:30am on Thursday, November, 30th at James River National Wildlife Refuge (Prince George County).
The newly scheduled event will involve a shoreline clean-up at the refuge to collect tires, barrels and other recently identified floating trash along the James River beach. Our team will employ the 35'x16' barge to work its way along the shore to pick-up the stockpile of tires and other debris for placement on the boat. The items will then be off-loaded to a trailer on the mainland and properly recycled.
The river views will be picturesque as we work along-side of the bald cypress. Expect to see eagle activity as well.If interested, please e-mail me and I'll provide additional details.
Sincerely,

juliekazz@comcast.net - RAS Dutch Gap litter clean-upHenricus Historical Park, Chester, VA
• WHO: ANYONE. All are welcome. Bring a friend.
• WHAT: Dutch Gap litter clean-up
• WHERE: Meet at the parking lot of the Henricus historical park at Dutch Gap
• WHEN: Saturday, December 2nd, 10am -noon
(rain date December 3rd 10 am-noon)
• Why: Dutch Gap is the adopted highway of RAS. It is one of our most frequently visited
parks. We got a good handle on trash removal back in February of this year. It is now time
to revisit and spruce up the park. Litter causes illness and injury to birds and other wildlife.
Removing these threats helps protect our environment.
• How: Show up and pick up. Safety vests, litter grabbers and bags will be supplied. If you
have a litter grabber, please bring it as we ran out of them last clean-up. Be prepared for
briars and mud. Since this is early December the bugs and snakes should be minimal
however ticks are possible all year so take your needed precautions
• What to bring: work gloves, wear closed toed shoes or boots, water, snacks, Field guide to
the trash of central Virginia.
Any questions please contact Julie Kacmarcik at juliekazz@comcast.net - Varina LandlabNeeds location
Join the ever resourceful Priscilla Erickson to check out one of the newest natural spaces in the area—the Varina LandLab. Since this is a relatively new space, it hasn't been birded much, so who knows what we will find! We will meet at the parking lot that is the default on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/LBuzkLtEbbeA7SeH7. Note that you will pass another parking area on your way to this one—keep going to the lot located where Deep Bottom Road makes a 90-degree turn. Dress warmly as this is a wide-open space and any wind is going to make it feel extra chilly. We may move the cars to the other parking area partway through the trip depending on what we find. Plan to walk 1–2 miles on uneven trails with many holes and roots.
RAS trips are open to all, RAS membership is encouraged but not required, and unless the trip says otherwise, you don't need to sign up. Please feel free to stay for as long as you want. Attendees do not need to stay the entire time listed.
