What we’re about
Shut Up & Write! is a global community that empowers writers to overcome procrastination, silence their inner critic, and make consistent progress on their projects. Our events provide a structured and focused environment where writers can come together, set aside distractions, and achieve their writing goals.
What to Expect
Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress. Once you arrive, our host will lead introductions, and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time. Afterward, we’ll have an optional time to chat and get to know each other. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

- Shut Up & Write!® at the San Mateo Public LibrarySan Mateo Public Library, San Mateo, CA
Join other writers in a supportive and social group for writers of all kinds every Thursday evening at the San Mateo Public Library. Whether you write for personal, professional, or other reasons, come prepared to work. This is not a critique or sharing group, but you are welcome to discuss your work during check-in time between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Writing is solitary, and this meeting is a chance to connect, and sometimes commiserate with other writers. Come late and leave early if you need to and bring a charged laptop as outlets are limited. The library and the parking garage close at 7 p.m.

Join us for an hour of writing! We've discovered that it's beneficial to write with other writers. See if it's true for you at 6:30 pm on Thursday evenings.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem, or just plain work, you can write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice (unless you ask for it). Instead of just thinking about writing, come, and get some real writing done.

- Shut Up & Write!® CUPERTINO (Panera Bread)Panera Bread, Cupertino, CA
Join a group of friendly writers for an hour of writing in Cupertino EVERY FRIDAY at the Panera Bread on Stevens Creek! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10:00AM on FRIDAY MORNINGS.
We have a strong group of regular attendees (indicated as "guest" on the RSVP list), and new people are always welcome! RSVPing helps me hold the right number of tables, so if you're able, please let me know you'll be attending.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing DONE.

OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING starts at 11:15am and continues for about 15-20 minutes (sometimes longer if folks want to stay and chat). Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: Just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be the person with the Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing, and I look forward to seeing you Fridays at the Panera Bread in Cupertino!
FAQs FOR CURIOUS WRITERLY TYPES:
1. WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
**Whatever you need to be able to write!**
Consider bringing earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the conversations of other patrons.
NOTE: There are VERY FEW OUTLETS at this location. I try to grab seats by the outlets in the front by the coffee dispensers, but they're popular and go fast. It's a good idea to come with your laptop or tablet CHARGED in case I can't reserve seats by the outlets.
2. WHAT ABOUT WIFI? I CAN'T LIVE/WRITE WITHOUT WIFI!
Panera Bread does have WiFi. You'll need to sign in to get connected.
3. WHERE DO I PARK/SIT?
- Parking: Located behind the building. I recommend parking by the Sizzling Lunch as their spots are a little bigger, and it's easier to get in and out.
- Seating: You'll know it's me by the SUAW sign. We're usually a big group, and I generally hold tables either in the front near the coffee dispensers OR a few booths midway through the restaurant along the glass windows. This can change, though, depending on how busy Panera is. Don't be shy - come up and say hello if you get there early (and help me hold our tables!).
4. DO I NEED TO BUY FOOD/DRINKS?
I will not be checking! Keep in mind that we are using their space, so it'd be great if you'd thank our hosts by purchasing something (tea or coffee or a fountain beverage works fine!).
