-----------------Welcome to the Santa Barbara Wednesday Night Sierra Club hike!
Every Wednesday at 6:30 pm, we meet at a designated trailhead in the beautiful front country of the Los Padres Forest for a mid-week adventure.
Each hike is intermediate to advanced, at approximately 5 to 10 miles, with elevation gains ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 feet. While individual paces vary, we average a moving speed of roughly 2.6 mph.
At the top, we take a break for about 20 minutes, enjoy the scenery, and share a snack before hiking down. Typically, we return to the trailhead by 10:30 pm, but hikes can run later.
----Requirements----
Fitness: Be able to hike 5-10 miles up and down a mountain, accounting for rough terrain.
Water: 2 liters is recommended.
Headlamp: Ensure your light is fully charged. A headlamp is preferable over a flashlight because it is better to have both of your hands free.
Snacks: Everyone is encouraged to bring a snack that can be shared with the group at the mountain peak.
Appropriate clothing: Check the weather forecast before the hike. It’s recommended to always have a windbreaker on hand. In the winter, you will also need a heavier jacket. Note that the temperature at the mountain peak can be 10-15 degrees cooler than it is downtown.
Dog policy: Dogs allowed on a case by case basis. Please contact me beforehand to check for suitability.
----Poison Oak Warning-----
The Los Padres National Forest is home to a substantial amount of poison oak. By hiking in this area, you are at risk of exposure.Around 85% of people will develop a severe, itchy and painful rash 24 to 72 hours after contact with poison oak.
To minimize your risk of being exposed, it is recommended to always wear long pants and long sleeves. In case of exposure, wash the affected area with hot water and dish soap within 2-8 hours, using a washcloth, towel, or loofah. According to biomedical scientist Jim Brauker, using friction is the most important step to never having a serious poison oak rash again.
