What we're about

The Washington DC Area Vegan Meetup Group

Engage with other vegans (and those aspiring) in the DC metropolitan area. Share ideas/thoughts on being or going vegan including recipes, vegan products, activities, restaurants, related topics, its philosophy, or simply make friends who share your interests.

The group is sponsored by the Veg Society of DC (VSDC, http://www.vsdc.org ), who provides the enabling structure and pays the regular Meetup fee so that individual members of the group do not have to pay anything. A number of the group's activities will be organized by VSDC (whose events are always planned vegan).

Activities will be community-building to support those already on the path to an all-plant vegan diet, as well as educational, to provide people with the information and insight to take the next step or become more involved. As part of VSDC's philosophy for positive encouragement and inclusiveness, everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of background and where they are on the path to a vegan diet and lifestyle.

All events will be vegan.

VSDC Book Club discusses "Super Fly" with author Jonathan Balcombe! (online)

Link visible for attendees

Please join the Veg Society of DC Book Club discussion of Super Fly: The Unexpected Lives of the World's Most Successful Insects by Jonathan Balcombe. The author, a former VSDC board member, plans to join us online!

“Balcombe provides an entertaining tour of the world of flies, from tiny midges and fruit flies to the large and obnoxious sandflies, all of which, he asserts, experience something like consciousness and have more going on mentally than we may believe.” - Kirkus Reviews

To participate you must read at least half the book—and RSVP at least two days before the meeting.

The VSDC Book Club began meeting online in March 2020 (previously we met in vegetarian restaurants in DC or nearby Maryland or Virginia). People who RSVP yes will get the details to join the discussion (the weekend before the meeting). The details will not be posted on meetup.

We read fiction and nonfiction in alternating months, about any topic. For more information (including everything we have read over 30 years!) visit: https://vsdc.org/Book-Club
Or contact Beth through meet up: http://www.meetup.com/vegan-28/message/?recipientId=1642817

VSDC Group Walk: Dupont Circle / Georgetown in DC

Needs a location

Join us for a VSDC evening stroll to socialize while being active and exploring the city! Walkers of all speeds are welcome; no one will be left behind.

For our first group walk on Thursday, June 30th, we will meet near the outside seating of the Starbucks in Dupont Circle (1501 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036) at 6:00 pm. At 6:15 sharp, we will begin walking west on P street into Georgetown until about 6:45, at which point we will return to Dupont Circle, ending our walk around 7:15.

After the walk, there will be an optional gathering for vegan food nearby, determined by the attendees for whomever can make it.

Capacity for this walk is limited, so don't be a no show. If your plans change, update your RSVP so that another may attend.

Weather: We will walk, even if light rain. If conditions pose a danger, we’ll cancel the walk and post a notice in the comments section on this page. We suggest you wear comfortable footwear and clothing.

VSDC (http://www.vsdc.org) is a clear and consistent voice for improving the lives of all beings through education on the benefits of a vegan diet & lifestyle. Sharing food is the bond that brings families together; so it is with VSDC. From simply “breaking bread” to experiencing delicious and nutritious vegan foods from around the world, we make your journey easier, enjoyable & meaningful.

Virtual Game Night: Drawasaurus!

Link visible for attendees

Join us for a game of Drawasaurus! Similar to the popular game Pictionary, Drawasaurus is a drawing & guessing game you can play on your phone, tablet or PC. Do your best to draw the word you are given while players try to guess it!

You'll need to be able to receive an email from VSDC with the Zoom meeting URL, so make sure you have enabled messaging in your Meetup settings (go to Meetup > Settings > Email Updates > Turn On).

We'll open up the game room 10 minutes early for folks who need a little extra time to get set up and then close the room promptly at 8:10 pm, so please be on time.

Don’t worry if you’ve never played Drawasaurus, or any other Pictionary-style game, before. All are welcome and we'll go over basic gameplay at the start of the event. If you want to practice beforehand, you can visit the website here: https://www.drawasaurus.org/.
