Mission: Williamson Audubon Group promotes the appreciation of birds by sharing knowledge and experience.
Serving:
If you are interested in serving on the WAG board or leading field trips or would like more information please contact one of the WAG organizers here on Meetup.
Meetings and Field Trips: To accomplish our mission, WAG will hold bi-monthly field trips from September through May and provide four evening programs during the year. Those persons interested in birding at all levels of expertise are encouraged to join us. We especially encourage beginners. Signups are limited on most field trips and members are given priority. Non-members may attend one trip.
On this website you can share pictures, check the calendar for upcoming events, participate in discussions and contact fellow members. We encourage the sharing of unusual sightings, the posting of bird lists from your times in the field, and your suggestions for activities for the group. Our goal is to provide a forum as well as have fun and enjoy all of nature with a focus on birds.

Lake Creek Trail - Early Migrants
Lake Creek Trailhead Picnic Area, 9504 Braes Valley St, Austin, TX, USWhether you’re a seasoned "lister" looking for that elusive spring fallout or a curious newcomer eager to see your first Painted Bunting, come join us for a morning of discovery at the Lake Creek Trail in Northwest Austin!
This hidden gem is a premier example of a well-protected urban habitat, acting as a vital green artery for birds navigating the Central Flyway. Because of its unique mix of riparian corridors and dense brush, it serves as a critical "refueling station" for tired migrants. What We’ll Be Looking For
Spring is a magical time at Lake Creek. We will be keeping our eyes (and ears!) peeled for:- Dazzling Warblers: From the bright yellow of the Wilson’s Warbler to the striking patterns of the Black-and-white, we’ll hunt for these "jewels of the canopy" as they flit through the oak and elms.
- Acrobatic Flycatchers: Watch for Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Eastern Phoebes performing mid-air stunts to catch their morning meal.
- Surprising Shorebirds: While often overlooked in urban settings, the creek’s edges often host Solitary Sandpipers or Spotted Sandpipers bobbing along the water’s edge.
A Comfortable Path for All
One of the best parts of this location is its accessibility. The trails are almost entirely paved sidewalks, making this a low-impact, easy-access hike. You won’t need heavy hiking boots—just comfortable walking shoes and your favorite pair of binoculars. We will move at a "birder’s pace" (slow and observant), ensuring everyone gets a chance to see the birds.New to Birding?
Don't be intimidated! This is a judgment-free zone. We’ll practice "birding by ear" and share tips on how to spot movement in the brush. For the veterans, this is a fantastic opportunity to share your expertise and perhaps help a neighbor find their "spark bird."The Details
Bring water, a hat, and your sense of wonder. Lake Creek Trail never fails to surprise us with its biodiversity, proving that you don’t have to leave the city limits to experience the wild heart of Texas.
Let’s flock together and celebrate the return of our feathered friends!***
We will meet at the Braes Valley TrailHead Parking Lot at 8am.

WAG Migration Weekender

Experience the Magic of Migration: A Coastal Birding Adventure!
Imagine standing under a canopy of live oaks as a vibrant Blackburnian Warbler—glowing like a living ember—flits just a few feet away. This is the magic of the Texas coast in spring, and I would love for you to experience it with me!
I’m thrilled to invite you on our upcoming WAG Weekender, a three-day immersion into the heart of the Greater Corpus Christi area. This is, without a doubt, my favorite place to be during migration. There is a specific kind of electricity in the air when the "fallouts" happen and the trees drip with colorful warblers, tanagers, and buntings.

Our Coastal Itinerary
We’ve created a "greatest hits" list of migration hotspots to ensure we see the very best the coast has to offer. Our adventure includes:- Mustang Island Gems: We’ll explore the lush vegetation of The Willows, the famous Paradise Pond, and the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center.
- Corpus Christi Classics: We’ll hunt for "skulkers" and songsters at Blucher Park, Rose Hill Cemetery, and the migrant-rich Packery Channel.
- The Inland Giants: We’ll head to Hazel Bazemore Park, a legendary spot for both passerines and raptors.
- The "Chase": Because birds have wings, we’ll stay flexible! If a rarity pops up nearby, we’re going for it.
Comfort & Connection
To make sure we are rested and ready for early morning birding, we are returning to the Candlewood Suites in Aransas Pass. Those of you who joined us for the Whooping Crane trip know how much we loved this spot—it’s clean, comfortable, and perfectly situated for quick access to both Port Aransas and Corpus Christi.Bonus Learning: Before we head out, I’ll be hosting a special class at the Georgetown Library. We’ll deep-dive into identifying those "confusing" warblers and other beautiful passerines so you’ll feel like a pro by the time we hit the field!
