Wood Lathe Basics and Certification @ Ace Makerspace
Ace makerspace, 6050 Lowell St., Ste. 214, Oakland, CA, USLearn the basics of safe (wood) lathe operation in this certification workshop. You’ll learn how to secure wood and operate a lathe. You’ll learn about different lathe tools and how to work with lathe tools to shape wood. You’ll have an extended chance to use the lathe yourself under supervision. Please bring a mask.

What to bring: A notebook or well-charged phone for taking notes.
What to wear: Closed-toe shoes, short sleeves, and work clothes. Long hair must be tied back.

Serger Basics & Certification @ Ace Makerspace

Level up your sewing skills with this class on using a Serger (aka Overlock) sewing machine. This class covers all the basics of using this fun but complex sewing machine. Serging is a great way to sew garments especially stretch fabrics and have great finish.
Level: Beginner
Timing: 2 Hours
Location: Coworking/Textiles suite 206
Prerequisites: Sewing 101, or basic sewing machine experience
Certification: Certification on the Ace Juki Sergers
Age: 18+We will review how this machine functions including how to read the manual. There will be hands on practice with threading for 3-Thread Overlock, Changing the needle and sewing a variety of fabric types. Troubleshooting, working with a differential feed and tensioning will also be reviewed.
Successful completion of this class qualifies folks to use the Juki MO-655N Sergers that Ace has in our Textiles studio.
This is not a bring your own machine class.What to Bring: If you wear glasses, please make sure to bring them.

FREE Workshop Care Night @ Ace Makerspace
Ace makerspace, 6050 Lowell St., Ste. 214, Oakland, CA, USThe Ace Workshop is a community space which means that we all have a role to play beyond simply working on our projects and cleaning up after ourselves. This social evening is all about working together to care for our tools, make repairs, and practice concepts covered in our Shop Basics class like logging assets and finding information on the wiki.

Age: 18+Our expert host, Howard Cohen, will help guide the group through a variety of repairs as we work in teams of two to tackle a checklist of current workshop maintenance and repair needs. This beginner-accessible volunteer event is a great entry point into both Ace shop culture and tool repair concepts + an easy way to make your monthly contribution of effort.
Each event is unique! One month we may align the Table Saw blade, repair a vacuum duct and re-home new tools; the next we may wax the tool tabletops and replace the cyclone filter.
Bonus: Try signing up with a friend or a date! At Ace we use the buddy system for all repairs.
