Second Blackberry Ice Cream Hike of 2025 - Hawksbill to Stony Man

Details

This is the second of our ever-popular Blackberry Ice Cream hikes this summer. Before digging into the ice cream treats, we’ll celebrate Shenandoah's more natural glories by hiking between (and to the top of) the only two peaks above 4000 feet in the entire park. We’ll start with the climb from Skyline Drive to the top of Hawksbill (4050 feet), where we’ll enjoy unobstructed views in almost every direction. Then we’ll bump along the Appalachian Trail to Stony Man (4010 feet).

Total length of this moderate-to-strenuous one-way hike is 8 miles, with about 1400 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Bring plenty of beverages, lunch, sturdy boots, bug spray, sunscreen, $5 for trip fee, $15 to reimburse your carpool driver, and a park pass if you have one. We are aiming for a prompt 8:30 a.m. departure from the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot.

Note that we will organize a car shuttle between the parking lots for Hawksbill and Skyland resort, where we will indulge in post-hike refreshments. Note also that no pets are allowed on the Stony Man trail.
