For those who are staying in town this holiday weekend, this post-Thanksgiving hike is a great leg stretcher and escape from the city life in Washington. We're bound towards miles of smiles in Harmony Hollow and Happy Creek near Front Royal, VA. Our hike takes us into the Northern section of Shenandoah National Park, a post-Thanksgiving Adventuring tradition that we're reviving this year.

Starting near the top of the Blue Ridge at Chester Gap, we'll climb briefly into Shenandoah, admire the westward vista from Possums Rest overlook, and promptly leave the Park on the Appalachian Trail to descend the mountain. After passing the Tom Floyd Wayside, we'll soon enter into the wide-open spaces of bucolic Harmony Hollow. A couple of miles of strolling on little-used country roads will steer us back into Shenandoah, where we'll climb the Blue Ridge towards Compton Gap and eventually back to our cars. Total length of this moderate-to-strenuous circuit hike should not exceed 8.5 miles, with 1800 feet of elevation gain. Moderately Strenuous hikes will generally be challenging for an unconditioned person. The terrain will involve a steady and often steep incline.

Bring beverages, lunch, sturdy footwear, and about $15 for transportation and trip fees. We'll make our usual Sheetz pitstop for last-minute goodies while enroute to the trailhead. Meet at 9:00 a.m. in the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot. RSVPs will open 2 weeks before the hike and close at 7pm the day before the event.
