Before the end of March, join me for a 3+ hour walkabout. Actual time depends on how much time we spend at the Irish Memorial and how much time we spend eating at GEOFF’s. The pace will be comfortable with no rushing.
Meet at 10:15 am. Park on Mauran Avenue, East Providence. We will be departing from the John L. Lewis Waterfront Park, 1 Pier Road, East Providence 02914 (next to East Providence Yacht Club). If coming over the Henderson bridge, turn right at the end onto Waterfront Drive. Follow Waterfront Drive and you will come to Mauran Avenue.
The photo is part of the Linear Park. It's a nice bike path with a nicer walkway for pedestrians. It has great views of the upper bay.
We will cross the Linear Park into India Point Park then head to and cross the beautiful and very expensive footbridge over to the Irish Memorial. Over a million died in the Irish famine. The memorial tells the history and the immense impact on RI. We’ll talk a bit about St. Patrick who was British and how he became Ireland’s patron saint. The land the memorial is built on was formerly a derelict corner in downtown Providence. See what ordinary people with a vision and desire to remember their history can do.
We will have lunch at Geoffs. Geoffs is famous and fun. You should look at the menu before and write two or three options on a piece of paper and put it your pocket so you won’t be mesmerized by the menu at the restaurant. The website is geoffssuperlativesandwiches.com. When you think you’ve seen it all, keep scrolling. They have several options for corned beef with no cabbage.
From there, we’ll walk back by Wickenden Street, take the India Point Park Bridge over route 195, back over the Linear Park to John L. Lewis Waterfront Park.
The walkabout is mostly on pavement, so your most comfy sneakers are fine. Temperature predicted to be 53 degrees, with wind 17 mph. My pre-hike was at 42 degrees with wind of 14. I had a facemask and didn’t need it, 42 was comfortable and seldom felt the wind. So, Saturday should be fine. Dress in layers, bring a hat, water and snacks.
