LOLLIPOP LOOP HIKE UP TO AWESOME VIEWPOINTS ON BREAKNECK RIDGE (VIGOROUS)

On this hike we begin and end on the pleasant Cornish trail, dotted with ruins of the old Cornish estate, but the highlight is an ascent up Breakneck Ridge via the steep Undercliff trail, which gets us to our lunch spot with gorgeous views of the river and surrounding mountains. This route avoids the rock scrambles associated with climbing the face of Breakneck, which is currently closed anyhow for construction. We can then take a short ascent up to the cliffs of Moppy Hill in Little Stony Point and end the day at our starting point in Cold Spring, where you can spend time at the Craft Beer Tasting (for a fee) and Artist/Artisan Market or enjoy the Fudge Factory on the waterfront Promenade. Frequent Hudson line train service back to Manhattan.

This isn’t a beginner’s hike and is not suitable for slow hikers who cannot keep up or stay with the group on a hot summer day. We will hike at a steady, moderate pace, not super-fast but not slow, over a distance of 7.5 miles including the road walk, with some steep hills (which many find challenging; hence, the vigorous rating) on hiking trails in the woods and on rocky terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1400 feet. Hikers should wear hiking boots and have at least 2 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise).

The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Grand Central and cars (AMC Trans code: 5D on the AMC New York-North Jersey website but take 8:55 train) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered. Drivers park in free train station lot, behind the train station, which is near our meeting spot.
