CLASSIC FULL LOOP HIKE UP TAURUS AND MOPPY HILL FROM COLD SPRING (VIGOROUS)

Saturday is looking like a nice summer day as we expect to begin our hike on the Washburn up Taurus to Cornish trail, and end with a brief ascent up to the cliffs on the Moppy Hill lookout in Little Stony Point, with scenic viewpoints along the way. We begin and end at our meeting spot. In Cold Spring afterwards, you can cool off with Moo Moo's ice cream or go to the Fudge Factory nearby on the waterfront promenade. Frequent train service back to Manhattan on the Metro North Hudson Line.

This isn’t a beginner’s hike and is not suitable for slow hikers who cannot keep up or stay with the group on a hot summer day. We will hike at a steady, moderate pace, not super-fast but not slow, over a distance of 8 miles including road walk, with some steep hills (which many find challenging; hence, the vigorous rating) on hiking trails in the woods and on rocky terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1600 feet. Hikers should wear hiking boots and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise). Please bring Gatorade, energy gel or other electrolytes of your choice to replenish what you lose sweating.

Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as wet and slippery rocks, may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates. We meet at 10:15 in Cold Spring. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Grand Central and cars (AMC Trans code: 5D on the AMC New York-North Jersey website but take 8:55 train) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered. Drivers park in free train station lot, behind the train station, which is near our meeting spot.
