Discussion: What's Up With SNC-Lavalin and The Federal Liberals?

* * Feel free to bring food or drinks to share! * * * * You must remove your winter boots inside this venue * * In February 2015, SNC Lavalin was charged with bribing Libyan public officials with C$48M and defrauding organizations of an estimated C$130M. If convicted of these crimes, the corporation could have been banned from bidding on government contracts for ten years. In 2016, the company lobbied the newly elected Liberal government to avoid prosecution. In 2018, the Liberal government enacted deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) legislation that allows the company to apply for a stay of criminal proceedings that would allow them to avoid trial and prosecution. Jody Wilson-Raybould, the Attorney General at the time, claims that she perceived the government's intervention as a consistent and sustained effort to interfere with her duties. The Liberal government maintains that this is a misunderstanding, no laws were broken, and that they acted to protect thousands of Canadian jobs. Are Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party conspiring to hide corruption or acting in the best interests of Canadians? What are the facts, myths and open questions in this affair? Discussion: Is Religion Still Relevant?

Tristan Lauber Studio

* * Feel free to bring food or drinks to share! * * * * You must remove your winter boots inside this venue * * Christopher Hitchens said that religion was our first attempt to make sense of the world. It was the best we could do at the time, but has gradually been made obsolete by modern replacements. Religious myths have been replaced by scientific understanding. Religious laws and morality have been replaced by modern notions of law, justice and ethics. Our desire for art, entertainment and community can now be catered by an endless array of secular sources. But many people believe that without religion or belief, there is something missing from our lives. They value their religious beliefs, practices, traditions and culture, and see no contradiction between religion and modern life. Is there any use or place for religion today? Should traditional, organized religions be replaced by personal or new-age spiritual beliefs? Or should we abandon the notion of faith-based belief altogether?
