Discussion: #metoo Moving Forward
* * Feel free to bring food or drinks to share! * * #metoo is a hashtag and social movement for raising awareness about sexual assault and harassment. It was used as early as 2006, but rose to prominence in 2017 as many women came forward with accusations against film producer Harvey Weinstein. The public discussion around these events has encouraged many other victims to share their experiences, and has spurred further discussion about feminism, sex education, justice and workplace policy. Although the movement is widely viewed as a net positive, and an overdue correction, there are criticisms against it. Detractors say that its objectives are unclear, it can inspire fatigue by saturating the media with stories of sexual harassment, it can cause victims to relive their trauma, and it can go too far and lead to over-correction. It also commits the logical fallacy of anecdotal evidence by focusing on individual stories, and particularly on the stories of celebrities instead of on statistical data or solutions. Is #metoo a net positive? Do you support the movement? Should it be improved, replaced or abandoned? Join us in this beautiful studio sponsored by Tristan Lauber for fun, friendly and substantive discussion about the important topics of the day. * * * * * * * * * * Latecomers are welcome but we start promptly at 6:05pm so if you arrive late, you will miss out!
