The Value and Risks of Empathy
Empathy is the ability to see the world from another person's perspective and it comes in two varieties: emotional and intellectual or understanding how others feel, and understanding how they think. It is highly valued, often-discussed and is an important meta-skill for critical thinking, sales, service careers, leadership and maintaining healthy relationships. But our intuitive empathic thinking does not always align with our values. The following quote sums up the cognitive illusion called "identifiable victim effect" where our feelings about a tragedy are backwards: the less people who are hurt, the more we feel for them. "One death is a tragedy. One million deaths is a statistic." - Anonymous quote, often misattributed to Joseph Stalin Do we need more empathy in the world or less? Can empathy be learned and practiced like a skill, and are their situations where we should ignore our empathic feelings in favour of other thinking methods? Journey up the mountain and join us for fun, friendly and substantive discussion about the important topics of the day. Look for the table near the pavillion (North side) with the balloon attached to it. In case of rain, we will go to the nearby cafe, or Hurley's Irish Pub instead, and a message will be posted on this page to advise you of the change of location. Feel free to bring food or drinks to share.
