What we’re about

AVL Writers (formerly Asheville Writers) started some time ago with events across for the WNC region. As of spring 2022, it's a small, intimate week-to-week gathering of writers in Asheille, NC who are actively working on a piece with the intention of publishing (or not). This includes all formats: long-form fiction excerpts like novels, novellas, short stories, screenplays, poetry, flash fiction, etc. We are critique-based, but that is not all we have been so far.

We also encourage one another to reach out to other writing organizations in the area, e.g. Flatirons and NaNoWriMo as concerns our growth as authors and as a group.

The group is critique-based, meaning that most events will feature a short but clear-eyed critique of anyone's work who is willing to share it. So far Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Odd's Cafe has been our most consistent schedule, however, this is likely to change as the fall approaches.

We will strive to have also more purely fun gatherings on weekends, typically a Sunday or two per month. This could be a brunch, going to a play or movie having to do with writers or artists, attending an art gallery ... ideas flourish here, and we are unafraid to embrace them authentically.
