• Tuesday Supper Club

    Bistro Lotte

Let’s gather about twice a month early evening to share life, work, the state of things or just bounce ideas around.
I’ve been wanting to do this since the pandemic …. I think we could all use a nice natter now and then, especially if you’re new to the area.
Expat, retired, entrepreneur, DFL or just in need of intellectual and social banter? Come on and dine with us!
    A few quick considerations:
    - limit to 6
    - please update your RSVP in time for someone else to hop in
    - plan on ordering something to eat!
    - every other Tuesday or Wednesday
    - location will be in FROME: either 8 Stoney Street, Bistro Lotte or Archangel (may rotate)
If you’re still on board, let’s do this! My plan is to make this a recurring event.
I’m really looking forward to putting this supper club out there and meeting all you lovely people. I’m Tessa btw, a Brit/American and I’ll be your host. Thanks Dave & Cath!

  • Ten Pin Bowling

    Bath Sports and Leisure Centre

Due to the 6 nations Rugby, skittles on a Saturday afternoon will be a bit 'hit and miss' for a while. Especially next Saturday 4th Feb. So, an ideal opportunity to have another go at 10 Pin Bowling. However, it's a bit costly ie. £17 for two games. I have provisionally booked lanes 1&2 for a maximum of 12 players. I can always reduce to 1 lane depending on demand.

  • Lansdown Slopes Walk

    The Old Crown

On 06 February 2022 we planted hundreds of trees on Purlewent Village Green which is part of our usual walking route to the Lansdown Slopes.
Time to take a look at how they are doing.

The route takes in many attractions including:
Primrose Hill Community Wood with the Memory Tree and my favourite statue; Beckford's Tower; Bath Racecourse;, Prospect Stile; Kelston Round Hill using the Cotswold Way and public footpaths / rights of way.
The c.20 mile panoramic views west, south and east take in the Severn bridges, the Mendips, Westbury White Horse and many parts of Bath, Bristol and Wales.

    Distance:
    About 7 miles.
There is an uphill start then mostly flat; we stop a few times to admire the attractions and scenic views.

    Start:
The Old Crown, Crown Hill, Weston Village, Bath, BA1 4BP

    Route:
Up Weston Park West, through a small wood which borders the Cotswold Way into Purlewent Village Green.
Follow footpaths through Primrose Hill Community Woods up to Lansdown slopes.
Across Lansdown slopes under Beckford’s Tower onto Lansdown football fields south.
Across Lansdown Lane into field before Bath Racecourse.
Footpath to the south of racecourse to Prospect Stile.
Continue on footpath to Kelston Round Hill.
Continue on Cotswold Way to High Street, Weston Village.

    Finish:
The Old Crown, Crown Hill, Weston Village, Bath, BA1 4BP
    https://theoldcrownweston.pub
"Debrief" in the pub (which has a garden); drink and socialise, MORE fun, dogs allowed.

Please wear walking boots as the ground is uneven and may be muddy in places.

Dogs are more than welcome and can be free to play for much of the walk BUT need to be under control in certain places.

How to get to the start:
    http://nationaljourneyplanner.travelinesw.com/swe/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2.

    Cancellation / postponement / changes:
If the weather forecast is rain the walk will be cancelled before midday. CHECK the event page before you set off; you should also receive an email with details.

    Guests:
Members should not bring guests / plus ones on walk events.
The reason for this is that the meetup.com disclaimer (agreed by everyone who joins Meetup), and possibly our BSG event disclaimer, may not be applicable to guests.
Invite your guest to join BSG and rsvp as a member, it's FREE.

    Photographs:
Everyone is invited to take pictures and post them to the event page. If anyone is concerned about inadvertently being included in a photo then this is not the event for you.

    Disclaimer:
This event is run by a volunteer, amateur, unqualified event organiser. We consider BSG to be a group of supportive friends. It is run on a best-effort, not for profit basis. Please assist the organiser by keeping together and not leaving the group without telling the leader. Please take care crossing roads, look out for motor vehicles and other hazards. • February Saturday Morning Book Club

    The Architect

Bath social group BOOK CLUB meet for Saturday Morning. Jenny will probably set up another meetup event to discuss the same book but on a weekday evening, so subject to availability you can sign up for the day/time you prefer!

BOOK TO BE DISCUSSED FOR FEBRUARY IS: "The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig.
A young woman weighed down by life attempts suicide. Instead she finds herself in an existence where she gets chances to explore multiple possible lives as she seeks fulfilment.

We will meet in the lobby/reception area of The Architect cafe/bar (formerly Garfunkels) in central Bath to discuss the book over a coffee or other drink.

Important: Please only sign up for this event if you are intending to come along, please do not "place hold" just in case! 😮

If you are only part way through the book by the time of the meeting you are still welcome to attend but bear in mind there may be spoilers!

If you do find for any reason that you have to withdraw, please change your RSVP to No straight away, in order to allow other people to book on and to ensure that attendees have a genuine idea of how many people will be participating.

Thank You and see you there! 🙂

    BOOK CLUB GUIDELINES:
    1. The Book Club is a friendly social gathering. Different views are welcome but please ensure you give others the opportunity to speak and treat others with respect.
    2. Books to be discussed are expected to be 21st century works of fiction available for purchase in paperback form (though participants can of course choose to read them in another format if they prefer). In most cases, the book should not be too long (i.e. c. 350 pages or less) though in exceptional circumstances the Event Organizer(s) may allow a longer book.
    3. This Book Club has been set up by Dave and Jenny. The intention is to create 2 separate meetup events to discuss the same book, one on a Saturday morning organized by Dave and the other on a weekday evening organized by Jenny usually a few days before or a few days after the Saturday event.
    4. Where, as indicated above, two separate meetup events focus on the same book, there is no bar on Bath Social Group members signing up to both events but if one of the two alternative event times/days suits you better you are advised to sign up just for that event, because in a situation where someone does sign up for both events, once a waitlist has started for one of the two events, the Event Organizer may at their absolute discretion & without notice remove that member from the event for which the waitlist has appeared, to enable someone else to attend that event. The intention is to allow as many different people to participate as possible.
    5. The aim is for the Book Club to run monthly but with a break for December when people tend to become occupied by Christmas preparations.
    6. There is no expectation that participants attend every monthly session of the Book Club. You can sign up for as few or as many of them as you like (subject to the proviso in point 4 above relating to a situation where someone signs up to two events discussing the same book).
    7. Suggestions for books to discuss are welcome. The current intention is for choices to be made by a random process (e.g. by periodically placing book suggestions in a hat and drawing out the ones to be discussed!) , subject to the considerations indicated in point 2 above.
