Subject: [paloaltoindiefilms] Fwd: PAIFF 2011 Film Program Announced!

Hello everybody,

the new Palo Alto International Filmfestival is getting off the ground! The line-up of films has been published, and there's some interesting new pieces in there (Tom Tykwer's "Three", Monte Hellman's "Road To Nowhere", "The Light Thief") as well as some great classics ("The Day The Earth Stood Still" - one of my personal favorites) and documentaries ("The Real Revolutionaries", "Bombay Beach").

Stay tuned for some meetups, and please let me know if you're interested in a specific film - if I'm not going to host it myself I'll be happy to put an event for you on the calendar!

Main Film Program

We are proud to announce our film program for PAIFF 2011!

An exciting lineup of 20 features and 74 short films has been curated from award-winning films and film festival favorites that fit PAIFF’s theme of innovation in art, film and technology.
On September 29, 2011, PAIFF will kick off the Festival by closing Ramona Street in downtown Palo Alto and offering a free outdoor screening of the inspiring Youtube documentary Life in a Day, which takes viewers all over the world. Many of our other films will take you to distant lands, too, from the pre-historic Chauvet caves in Cave of Forgotten Dreams to the villages of Kyrgyzstan in The Light Thief.
However, PAIFF will also feature two illuminating documentaries with a Silicon Valley focus. PressPausePlay examines the digital democratization of culture, and Something Ventured looks at the history of the first “venture capitalists” and the transformative companies they founded: Apple, Intel, Cisco and more.
You can also see the hand of masters at work in Monte Hellman’s romantic noir Road to Nowhere, Thomas Vinterberg’s Submarino and our film retrospective 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, presented by Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation.
Visit the PAIFF website to purchase passes, individual tickets, tickets to our Digital Native Youth Program and to learn more!

PAIFF will welcome dozens of visiting filmmakers and industry leaders. We are looking for Palo Alto residents willing to open their homes and host these filmmakers and innovators during the weekend of the Festival, September 29 - October 2. We will be offering 2 Festival Film passes, which includes access to all films. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
For more information, please contact Jenni Rowland at [address removed].

community grants and programs

PAIFF has awarded a $1,000 travel grant to Iceland’s Vala Halldorsdottir and Sesselja Vihjalmsdottir, the creators of the documentary film about entrepreneurship The Startup Kids. Vala and Sesselja will travel back to the Bay Area to finish working on their film.
Learn more about The Startup Kids on the PAIFF Blog.
