About us
Hi My name is Antoine Hunter and I am Deaf . I've been leading this meet up non-stop since 2009 FALL!
I feel it is important for me to set up a place where Deaf people and Hearing can meet up and Speak... excuse me SIGNS the beautiful language of Sign Language.
I love my Sign Language and sharing things about what in our Deaf community. It is VERY important for me to participating in the Deaf community and culture, and may we never feel that we get enough. Deaf and ASL will never die!
East bay Berkeley and Oakland- Do not often have people to come together and sign so I felt it is important to continue it. Jamil Walker help set up Berkeley ASL meet up a few years ago... He did a very good job and now step down. I want to continue to thank him for all his hard work. We must keep this alive, because we need a place to go. Without our place or without a home- we are lost. Get ready for some fun ASL meet up. FEEL free to always email me idea or what ever come to your heart. So far we had Pool tables night, Dance and sign, wine and oyster night, bowling, pools and so much more.
DEAF ASL- WHY I PUT "DEAF" BECAUSE THERE IS MANY MEET UP OUT THERE THAT ARE LEAD BY ((HEARING PEOPLE)) THAT NEVER REALLY BEEN INVOLVED IN DEAF CULTURE. I AM STRICTLY INVOLVE IN DEAF CULTURE AS I AM DEAF AND PROUD OF IT. I'VE LEARNed THAT SOME PEOPLE GIVEN FALSE HISTORY ABOUT DEAF CULTURE.. IM HERE TO SPEAK THE TRUTH OF ASL.. Diversity AND Unity IS MY GOAL!!
Hearing people : This is the place to find more Deaf to hang out with and other people who are learning ASL. It ALWAYS FUN to learn ASL in the East Bay Area. Do not feel scare to come learn our language and it ok if you know nothing about Sign Language because I would be more than happy and excited to teach you our language- ( bring pen and bring paper and good energy.) All Level are welcome. We will try to make more event where Deaf children, KODA/CODA , Hearing children.. unity is the keys.. this is not just about ASL but about culture and you are welcome to be our Deaf allies!!
Deaf/Hard of Hearing people: Sometime it hard to find other people who are in local area and know ASL this is going to be the perfect place to meet other deaf and hearing who share the language of ASL, BSL, ESL, SEE and more. We will welcome you to the world of American Sign Language. No one is reject from their background of ASL.. Let learn and laugh together..
We want to encourage everyone to feel welcome to ASL.
We Continue to bring you, the East Bay Area, Berkeley/Oakland DEAF ASL Meetup Group.
Please Come hang out, meet new people (deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing), and converse in American Sign Language! Any level of signer are alway welcome!
Rules: HAVE FUN, be nice..... AND MINGLES!
Some place said No voice should be used. This group we say it better to practice no voice but no one will send you away if you are using your voice but as long as you are trying to communicate in ASL then it a winner for you. Many Deaf friend tend to use their voice but a few will not. It just culture and depend on person. Please don't worry if you get stuck we have very cool people and help you out. We are a team. This a place to meet, learn and enjoy. Enjoy life and sign.
