Re: [betaNYC] In Search of Hess' Triangle

Chris,

Great sleuthing. For early property info, I'd suggest two places:

1) the Manhattan Borough President's office has all the "libers" - the books of deeds, transfers, and all other property transactions since they started recording these things. It's the paper predecessor of ACRIS. Generally you start with the most recent transaction and work backward.

2) the NYC Dept of Municipal Archives. They have all sorts of historic property info, including individual index cards for each property in the city. Apparently Dept of Finance originally used these cards as the basis for their computerized database that we now know as PLUTO. But the cards have more info about the history of each parcel that didn't make it into PLUTO.

As an aside, our Center is discussing with Municipal Archives how we can help them digitize this and other info. It's a treasure trove!

Contacting the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation might be worth a try.

Ironically the public walks over, and the IRT runs under it every day,

I wanted to share a blog post about a fun little NYC Urban Planning story.  A few weeks ago, Noel shared an interesting post on the FB group about a tiny triangle of land that was the result of extending 7th Avenue through the Village in the early 1900s.  Its owners left a little message to the world about how the city took ALMOST all of their land 100 years ago.

In this blog post, I summon PLUTO data as well as NYPL online historic maps to answer some questions about the origins of this little triangle.

This story has it all: government takings, urban planning, historic and GIS mapping, etc.  I thought some on this list might find it interesting.

Also, I am in search of the transfer records for this triangle, both from when it was first chopped up around 1915, or from when it was consolidated with its neighbor in the 1930s.  I assume I need to be physically present in the basement of some building to find these.  Has anyone researched historic real estate transaction records in NYC?
