You can get the sim cards in the US for about $30 or so. But it's only for two phones. This was for Verizon I don't know about the others.

I tend to rent mobile phones at the airport.

For my most recent trip, I rented a phone from Softbank at Narita airport for $2.50 a day.  Outgoing calls were 90 yen a minute, but incoming calls were free.  I used it sparingly, but it was very useful to have when I needed it.

This is super important! I went to Tokyo this past Christmas and thought I must be able to get a SIM card from the Softbank store in Shinjuku for a 3G GSM phone that I have. Boy was I wrong! I had to spend an extra 3 hours (round trip) on the slow train (didn't want to spend another ?3000 on the Narita Express) the next day to go back to Narita from Shinjuku to get a SIM card.
