Dr. Martin Bickman Presents: Wrestling with the "God, Nature, & Humans" Triangle
Details
CU Boulder English professor, Dr. Martin Bickman, presents "How Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman & Dickinson Wrestled with the God, Nature, & Humans Triangle".
In the 19th century, a major epistemological and metaphysical shift in the three-cornered relationship of human-nature-god took place, aimed at the integration of all three. Emerson removed himself from the Unitarian church to see 'Christ' as a metaphor for how God incarnates him/herself in the human through direct experience. I will also examine Thoreau, Melville, Whitman and Dickinson following the same lines of feeling and thought.
"And there is no object so soft but it makes a hub for the wheel’d universe..." - Walt Whitman
