John Stevenson, Professor Emeritus, CU Boulder, scholar of 18th century British literature will present An Analysis of Three Classic Paintings by William Hogarth.

William Hogarth (1697-1764), was an English painter, engraver, pictorial social satirist, and editorial cartoonist. His moral and satirical engravings and paintings provided narrative social commentary on the immoralities of modern society. He was was the first great English-born artist to attract wide admiration abroad.

Hogarth is best known for three sets of paintings (and accompanying engravings) titled A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress, and Marriage A-la Mode. Professor Stevenson will examine these delightful, satirical, sometimes bawdy, but always political paintings in fine detail.
