What we’re about
Welcome to Boulder Math Club!
Overview:
With the high-pressure of academics and the rise of AI in school, it's my vision to start an organic community of math enthusiasts who meet weekly in-person and discuss mathematics-related problems in a fun way, where the goal is understanding rather than getting a grade. You might think of it like an online forum, where people ask and answer questions, but in-person where you can discuss your questions in a small group, or bounce your research ideas off other people in the community who have similar mathematical knowledge.
Structure and Goals:
This is not primarily a study hall for tutoring and homework help, although that might be a part of the group in relation to community outreach.
I envision a group of people interested in learning math together, and see this group moving in up to three directions:
- As a book club, where we discuss a common area of skill/knowledge where most of us may be weak, and work through a book together. We can meet weekly to discuss problems that we struggled with and share insights or research problems related to the topic area.
- As a think tank where we share problems we have been thinking about, and if anyone in the group can offer insight (similar to a programming meetup, where people discuss a problem they are wrestling with in their code).
- A place for community outreach in the form of free tutoring and mentoring for high school students with an interest in advanced math.
Requirements:
I am not a professional or expert in mathematics. So I imagine people will join who are more skilled than myself. At the same time, this group is not intended for beginners. In order for us to be able to sharpen each other's knowledge, I'm asking that you have some understanding of at least three of the following topics: geometry, linear algebra, discrete math, differential equations, abstract algebra and real/complex analysis.
Rules:
No use of profanity or sharing explicit content in meetings.
I encourage you to join the group if any of the following resonate with you:
- You enjoy reading and working through math books in your spare time.
- You enjoy answering/asking questions on Math Stack Exchange.
- You want to discuss things you have been learning about or working on, but cannot find people close by who share your interests.
