What we’re about
We live in a climate of accelerated pace of change. As a consequence we rush to short-term goals, neglecting sustainable outcomes. We must shift toward resilient and sustainable organizations that are quick to learn and adapt. SF BABAM is a community where we encourage you to be curious, share ideas, and explore the new patterns of a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world.

- LS: Putting Surprise & Serendipity to WorkLink visible for attendees
Liberating Structures (LS) are simple rules that make it possible to include every voice in shaping next steps and the future. The LS repertoire consists of 33 practical methods versatile enough for anyone to use for a wide array of activities and challenges. LS methods are inspired by complexity science. None require expert training. They spark lively engagement by minimally structuring the way we interact while liberating content or subject matter. Very simple constraints unleash creative adaptability, generating possibilities where none seemed to exist before.
LS are particularly well matched with developing business agility across and in each part of an organization. During this session, we will use a handful of LS methods to shape agile strategies for operating in a range of plausible yet unpredictable futures. We will feature a LS called Critical Uncertainties. This LS helps a diverse group quickly test the viability of current strategies and build its capacity to respond quickly to surprise. This means being better able to see different futures unfolding, better prepared to act in a distributed fashion, and more prepared to absorb disruptions resiliently.
Learning goals for the session include:
experience directly the use of Liberating Structures to face up to a complex problem
gain insights by balancing the predictability and unpredictability of possible futures, not putting all your eggs in one basket
widen the circle of people skilled in shaping agile responses, not relying solely on a small circle of experts or leaders
grok the underlying pattern and logic of liberating interaction with LS, not trying to retrofit conventional approaches
Rather than predicting the future and staying on course, we will put surprise and serendipity to work! Expect serious fun and a roll up your sleeves session.
