If you like old buildings and remember when malls were popular, you might consider this location an example of living history.

This fourth-largest mall in Maine, which opened in 1979, is well-kept yet maintains an authentic retro look and feel throughout.

As pictured, it houses popular stores like J.C. Penney, Spencer's, and Bath & Body Works. And there's an arcade/family eatery and a few more dining spots: Thatcher's (a pub/restaurant) and Nutty Netties Cafe. An empty shop space features a large motorcycle collection and other curiosities, reportedly placed there by the mall's owner.

The mall also isn't too busy on a Sunday during the holidays; the decor adds to the festive feel. It offers lots of room for a small group to walk. You can also take the chance to do some holiday shopping or even donate a toy.

The mall is also centrally located, near a Goodwill, Panera Bread, Shaw's, and other major retailers. If we're up to it, we can stop for lunch at the mall or nearby.

Where we'll meet: At the main entrance next to J.C. Penney, where the largest "Auburn Mall" sign hangs above a series of doors, close to Family Time -- NOT the entrances next to Thatcher's or Super Shoes.
