***If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together ***
– African Proverbs
CHAB (California Hiking And Backpacking) is a group based in San Francisco for those aged 18 and over who want to share in the enjoyment of the outdoors who want to “go together,” and enjoy the “journey” together. We hike and backpack primarily in California but may go out of state or out of the country at times.

The group is maintained and organized by fellow volunteer hikers. To maintain awareness of one another (safety) and to help mitigate impact on trails, we hike in small groups. As a member, you’re expected to: 1) Follow all safety requests from organizers, 2) Be aware and respectful of your fellow hikers, and 3) understand and practice Leave No Trace (LNT) principles during hikes with the group.

Principle #3 of Leave No Trace (LNT):

There are risks inherent with outdoor activities. The organizers/hosts are volunteers organizing events; we are not experts or professional guides. It is your responsibility to research information such as trail condition, weather, fire updates, and air quality to determine whether it is safe for you to participate.

As a courtesy, scheduled hikes may provide detailed descriptions such as difficulty level, mileage, elevation and other important hiking information to consider. Some trips may be at a fast pace over difficult terrain some may be slow and flat.

We believe in the “no hiker left behind” principle. That said, in consideration of your fellow hikers, we emphasize the importance of knowing your own hiking abilities/limitations and understanding whether or not any given trip is appropriate for you. For example: If the pace for a 7 mile trip is described as approximately 2.5mph, the participants expect to be able to be done with their hike and go on about their day within 3-3.5 hours, not 7 hours. Likewise, if a 5 mile pace is too slow for you, you may find yourself feeling frustrated at having to keep that pace. Make sure you are willing and able to hike as a group before you sign up.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY: Hiking, water activities, and all outdoor events are rewarding and pleasant activities in nature, but there are certain dangers you should be aware of. Those include, but are not limited to, trip and fall injuries, Acute Mountain Sickness, drowning, poison oak exposure, bee stings, tick, snake bites and etc. By signing up and/or attending any meetup on this group you and your guest(s) assume the risks of the trip/activities and agree to release CHAB (California Hiking And Backpacking), event organizer(s) or host(s), other volunteers and anyone associated/related to this meetup group from any claims for any injuries or other losses sustained during any of the hikes and activities. If you are bringing a guest(s), it is your responsibility to inform and confirm with him/her of this liability agreement. By signing up for this event, you assume all risks and agree to hold harmless and indemnify the organizers/hosts against all claims without limitation.
