What we’re about
City Walks Houston is a walking group that offers members an up close view of the city with 6-7 mile hikes exploring the parks, neighborhoods, and bayous around us. In addition to hikes, City Walks Houston arranges occasional tours of the parts of our community that you never see from behind the steering wheel. City Walks Houston is for active people who want to see more of this place and meet others so inclined.

Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willowbend Boulevard, Houston, TX, USToday's walk covers new ground for us at the Willow Water Hole, a large, new flood control structure and walking area. Beginning at the church, we will see the mouldering remains of Westbury Square, the newest, coolest thing in 1974. Time has not been kind to Westbury Square. Next, a short neighborhood walk and then the lakes and greenspaces of the Willow Water Hole structures which are intended to keep the flood waters at bay. That is one to watch for. Afterward we will gather at Watershed, a place Henry D. turned up. Should be fun!

St. Arnold's Brewery, 2000 Lyons, Houston, TX, USThis walk includes a train ride so bring a $1.25 for train fare.
Today is our second try at this walk, an appreciation of John Nova Lomax. Lomax was a Texas writer who, between 2006 and 2010, wrote a series of articles for the Houston Press about his epic journeys: beginning with a ride on the Metro System out to the end of the line, he would walk back into town where he was always willing to give a moment to the dive bars, abandoned furniture, lost shopping carts and the people invariably found nearby. His writings, gathered together into the book, The Sole of Houston, by his father John Lomax III, reveal his willingness to recognize and regard the wet crusty edges of the fabric of the city with its Wows and Weirds!?! and the occasional Maybe We Should Just Keep Moving.
