• Japanese for Cool People: Beginner & Intermediate Japanese (Sept. 19, 2019)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am trying a brief experiment with switching the day of the week to Thursday @ 7:00. Sorry for the short notice. -カイル先生 (Kanji in parentheses are for the preceding word.) THIS WEEK’S AGENDA (こんしゅうの アジェンダ ): -漢字(かんじ)のれんしゅう -元気(げんき)のれんしゅう -Have something Japanese-related to do with a group? Bring it! It can included any questions you have. -- Are you a beginner-level Japanese speaker who wants to converse with others in a structured environment? Are you ready to take your Japanese past absolute beginner to something more? Then Japanese for Cool People might just be for you! We are here to help you further improve on the lessons you learn and give you guidance on your way to fluency. THIS MEETUP IS FOR YOU IF: -You know the hiragana and katakana alphabets. They are the basic sound building blocks of the language and absolutely necessary. -Hiragana learning resources are found here: [www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/hiragana] and katakana learning resources are here: [www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/katakana] -You are ready to be in this for the long run: This is a class for those wanting to learn the language, and we cannot help those hoping to learn it quickly for a trip The meetups will last 1½ to 2 hours every other week. The agenda will alternate between lesson exercises and a cultural topic. LESSON EXERCISES: The lesson exercises will practice concepts from the 2nd edition of the Genki series of textbooks and use the chapters for guidance. We will also answer any questions people may have. Everyone must come prepared with the chapters read in advance and doing any solo studying they wish to do. We can help you better understand, but these are not lessons where we go over the concepts in the chapter. You, as the learner, must put in the time to be ready for the meetup. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED YOU GET THE 2nd EDITION OF GENKI VOLUME ONE; OTHERWISE, THE MEETUP WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW. We will do some light vocabulary work along with Kanji, but it is suggested that you also learn vocabulary on your own. Genki provides lists in each chapter, and they tend to be a good basis for learnig. Kanji starts in chapter three, and it is recommended you start writing as soon as they start presenting it in the book. The sooner you learn it, the better. If you need a flashcard system for the computer, you can find one at www.ankiweb.net; it’s also available for free on Android. It is not recommended for iOS since it is extremely expensive. However, the app Japanese [free] has a flashcard system built in. Additionally, Genki Vocab Cards app [$5.99 plus tax] has vocabulary from both the first and second volume of the textbook. We can also teach you how to best use it for an even better learning experience! CULTURAL TOPIC: For the cultural topic, an item from Japanese culture will be brought, and then the group will consume and discuss the topic. The topics can range from videos to menus to songs. The point is to see Japanese within a native context to familiarize yourself with it and have fun! Learning the language is a great start, but if you don’t get to use it, where’s the fun in that? Not all cultural topics may be in Japanese necessarily, but there’s a good chance they will be. So be prepared! Does all this sound exciting to you? Great! Japanese is a great language to learn, and there are many opportunities to use the language if you want to. There’s been a huge explosion of Japanese media thanks to companies like Netflix and Funimation. Japanese language manga can also be ordered pretty inexpensively through Amazon. However, you should also study Japanese for the love of learning something new, because it is a long road to go down. But in a couple of months, you might find a sentence that was baffling to you has become comprehensible. It’s such a cool feeling! That’s why we’re here to help, and we hope that you’ll join us.
