What we're about

Welcome to The Design Collective (Formerly South Bay UX). Our 3 organizers are designers from Google, Walmart, and Samsung.

We are largely a social group. Most often you'll catch us meeting up over coffee, co-working, or mingling with others in UX at a group mixer. We also do career-focused and interactive meetups, portfolio reviews, office tours and more. Check out an awesome article a member wrote about us.

Looking forward to meeting you!

UX Book Club: Let's discuss 'Articulating Design Decisions'

Needs a location

Hi folks! What a long time it's been!

Let's get the group back together. For our first book club event post-Covid let's discuss "Articulating Design Decisions" by Tom Greever. I've heard that this book is a must-read for product designers.

From the author:
"The purpose of this book is to help designers become better communicators—to expertly explain their design decisions to the people who have influence over their project. The entire premise of the book centers around a meeting: a meeting with clients or stakeholders at which we present and talk about our design decisions. Everything is written with this meeting in mind: before, during, and even after this meeting. Everything that we will walk through focuses on this meeting and is meant to help you become better at leading, participating in, and getting support in these situations."

More info on the book:

  • Walk through the process of preparing and presenting your designs
  • Understand stakeholder perspectives and learn how to empathize with them
  • Cultivate both implicit and explicit listening skills
  • Learn tactics and strategies for expressing the most effective response to feedback
  • Create the right documentation for your decisions to avoid repeated conversations
  • Discover why the way you follow through is just as important as the meeting itself

Here's where you can purchase the book:

Please save the date. We will come up with a venue for you soon.
