Goombay Skip Day Hike 2 - OLD RAG MOUNTAIN/SPRING EDITION
Friday, May 3rd | 5am - 6pm
Old Rag is an awesome hike in Shenandoah National Park. Some say it's even the best hike in the mid-Atlantic region. Old Rag Mountain tops out at 3,284 feet. Though the tip is far from the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Old Rag is unique for its rocky summit and difficult terrain, which includes long stretches of bare rock that bear a closer resemblance to the rugged peaks of Yosemite than anything else you'll find in Virginia. This is a fun but challenging hike that is great for adults!
COST
$110 per hiker (Park entrance fee, day-use ticket, bus/van transportation & guides)
* Van/Bus transportation will pick up and drop off from the Vienna South Metro Park & Ride 9550 Saintsbury Drive, Fairfax ($4.95 per day to park)
* We will depart at 5:00am and return by 6:00pm$40 per hiker (Park entrance fee, day-use ticket & guides)
** If you are driving your own car, meet us at the Old Rag Boundary Parking Lot and wait for the group to check in at the Ranger Station.- From Sperryville, Route 211: Take Route 522 south for .8 mile. Turn right onto Route 231 and go 8 miles. Turn right onto Route 601 and follow the signs to the parking area (approximately 3 miles).
Participants MUST Register at www.Goombay.net
* All payments are non-refundable but transferable to another participant for this event.________________________________________
### THINGS TO KNOW
### Where Tickets are Required
Visitors to Old Rag Mountain, including hikers on the Saddle, Ridge, and Ridge Access trails, will need an Old Rag day-use ticket that will be purchased by Goombay in advance, in addition to a Park entrance pass. View the map of the full area where tickets are required.
### Pace Groups
We have have two designated pace groups for this hike, Fast Hikers & Slow Hikers. There will be Goombay Hike Admins in each group and we ask that each hiker assess your pace ability so that you will hike with the appropriate pace group.
### Safety
This is a strenuous, remote hike so know what to expect before you arrive. Children often need assistance navigating the rock scramble. Wear proper hiking clothing and footwear, and stay on the marked trail as hazardous terrain and conditions frequently result in visitor injuries. Bring plenty of water, and prepare for unexpected weather and delays.
### Cell Service
Cell and GPS services are unreliable on Old Rag Mountain, so please plan accordingly. There is no internet service available.
### Pets
Pets are prohibited on the Ridge, Saddle, Old Rag Access, & Ridge Access trails.
### Hiking Map
There are several different ways to hike Old Rag, but we will be going up the rock scramble and head back on the Fire Road. You may print or download the Old Rag trail map so that you have it with you while you're hiking.
