The dance of the owls hike: bird, walk and photograph rare birds
First of all...Attention this is a BIRDING TRIP and a HIKE which will involve stopping, waiting and looking for birds.
Time to take an easy walk along the coast to my happy place, I am not feeling like hiking hills and travelling too far away on this day so let's hop on a train to the coast of Kent and breath in the fresh air! If you want wild traditional English Coast, this is a place to go to. Pebble beaches. swamps, surrounded by nature reserves, golf courses and manor houses, without the crowd of Brighton or Eastbourne.
This trip should be quite an experience, whether you like birds or not, being surrounded by flying owls is quite something and my number one favourite nature show so why not try it out?!
I do recommend cameras and binoculars as you never know what surprise you can get in this magical place!
We will look for wildlife but the star of the day will be the short eared owls! If the weather allows, they can put up quite a unique show and will flight just a meter or two away, in some cases, not caring the least about any of us, so if you are a photographer or a birder, or want to witness something difference, this is your trip!
Of course, it is nature, I cannot commend the owls to come out in the middle of the day but they usually do unless there is a lot of wind so we have got many chances to live the show from the front row seats
The area is a well known nature reserve with one of the largest.concentration of overwintering owls in the country, there were at least nine the last time I came so let's hope for some lucky day! We will walk along and will stop for photos whenever we spot one of those gorgeous feathery friends. This year is one of the most exceptional for the shorties, as we call them in the country and populations at a number rarely seen before have just arrived from Russia and Scandinavia.

France is right across the Chanel and we might spot the white cliffs of Calais on a clear day.
This is a lovely walk, flat and easy, great for beginners of for people who just want to spend a day out on the Coast without too many human activities around.
The area is one of the prime migratory routes for birds in Britain and host an impressive list of rare bird species from around the globe over wintering.
A colony of harbour seals also inhabit the nearby bay so we might even spot one or two at hight tide.
[Sandwich Bay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich_Bay,_Kent) is home to [nature reserves](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_reserve) and two world-class [golf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golf) courses, [Royal St George's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_St_George%27s) and [Prince's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince%27s_Golf_Club,_Sandwich) where golfers are used to being interrupted by hunting short eared, barn and long eared owls, quite peculiar isn't it? The town is also home to many educational and cultural events. Sandwich also gave its name to [the food](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich) that you like by way of [John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Montagu,_4th_Earl_of_Sandwich), who didn't actually live in Sandwich...
ATTENTION: PLEASE WEAR WARM CLOTHING. WE WILL STAY AT THE SAME SPOT FOR ABOUT an HOUR TO WAIT FOR THE OWLS and will spend some time in a hide for lunch to spot snipes, jack snipes, avocets and other birds.
Those who wish are welcome to join for a delightful diner at a Turkish restaurant afterwards. It is located next to the station so if you prefer to head back home, just jump on the train.

🥾 **Hike Description**
This route is less rural than our usual hikes and leans into **heritage, grandeur, and past glories**: riverside gazebos, castle lawns, and stately parkland. It’s a graceful day that trades wild hills for elegant landscapes and centuries of story-soaked architecture — a walk through **England’s cultivated beauty and historic refinement**.
We begin by following the **River Lea Canal**, where ornamental gazebos and overhanging willows frame the water — a genteel **Georgian scene** that sets the tone for the day. From the river, we head to **Hertford Castle**, tracing ancient streets to its green, sheltered grounds and the mellow brick remnants of medieval power softened by time. Once a **royal palace**, the castle served as a residence for **Queen Elizabeth I** and famously housed **Parliament during the Great Plague of London** in 1563, when it fled the capital for safety.
Leaving town, our route follows the Cole Green Way, a leafy, level greenway along a disused Victorian railway line that leads us through tranquil countryside and quiet woodland glades toward the grand parklands beyond. The route is rich in gentle charm — bridges, hedgerows, and old rail cuttings now reclaimed by nature — guiding us smoothly into the open beauty of **Panshanger Park**.
Here, **lakes, lawns, and tree-lined avenues** showcase the design and symmetry of a great English estate. The park’s vast landscape invites slow wandering — pausing to admire the elegant **Orangery** and the mighty **Great Oak**, said to have been planted by **Queen Elizabeth I** herself nearly six centuries ago. We end the day back in **Hertford’s historic centre**, with time to unwind among its riverside pubs, cafés, and handsome Georgian streets — the perfect close to a day devoted to **England’s elegant past**.

• Remnants of local fishing traditions at the **"Graveyard of Lost Species"**
🥾 **Hike Description**
Our hike begins as we follow scenic trails into **Hadleigh Country Park**, a sprawling 387-acre area of meadows, marshes, and woodlands recognized for its natural beauty and biodiversity.
We ascend toward **Hadleigh Castle**, perched atop a ridge with captivating views over the Thames Estuary. Built in the 13th century, the castle was a strategic defensive position and later immortalised in a painting by John Constable. We pause to soak in the panoramic views and immerse ourselves in Essex’s medieval past that has inspired artists and writers for centuries.
Continuing along the **Thames Estuary Path**, we journey toward **Two Tree Island**, a 634-acre nature reserve surrounded by saltmarsh and tidal mudflats. This peaceful island is crucial for various bird species, providing winter refuge for migratory birds. It is a haven for birdlife, including avocets, brent geese, and Mediterranean gulls.
Finally, we arrive in **Leigh-on-Sea**, a charming seaside town with a proud fishing heritage that still continues today. Known for its vibrant maritime culture and delicious cockles and often ranked as one of the best places to live in the UK, Leigh-on-Sea offers the perfect end to our hike, we have time to explore and also enjoy a drink in a coastal pub.

FREE Beginner HIKE Lord Rothschild's Tring Park, Grand Union Canal
This walk takes us into the heart of the **Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty**, beginning at **Tring Station**. We’ll start gently along the **Grand Union Canal**, passing through Dixon’s Gap and the old **Wilstone Step Locks**, before looping around **Marston Vale Nature Reserve** – a peaceful spot loved by birdwatchers.
From there we’ll follow the brook into Tring and pick up the ancient **Icknield Way**, often called Britain’s oldest road. The trail soon opens up into **Tring Park**, once landscaped by Lord Rothschild. It’s a quirky place with sweeping lawns, hidden follies and woodland paths. Back in the 1880s, Rothschild even filled the park with exotic animals – imagine giraffes and kangaroos roaming the English countryside!
We finish by joining the **Ridgeway National Trail**, winding back towards Tring for our train home. This is a sociable countryside walk with a mix of canals, nature, and history – just the right balance for a relaxed day out.
